I'm looking for a good cicada recipe that uses the foam body. did a google search, and didn't come up with anything.

thanks,

Chewie,

Early cicadas have an orangish tint to them, while later bugs take on a yellowish cast. Add an underbody of orange grizzly saddle trimmed flush all around, then tie on the foam, or use orange KF as an underwing. You can also get peacock dyed orange now.

Some patterns:

The current Fly Tyer Mag has an article about the one fly competition in Jackson Hole. If you haven't seen it there are a bunch of flies in the article. A couple of the terrestrials could be changed to an orange or yellow and black combo and used for cicadas.

I'm still having fun trying to tie some of those flies. Lots of foam terrestrials. ( I'm starting to see foam in my sleep)

thanks for the links / info! Dan - I'm hoping I don't see foam in my sleep like you do!

It's interesting that those patterns are dominated by black foam while the natural is much lighter. Here's a good page with photos of naturals

I believe the cicadas in those pictures are lighter than the ones on the Green. Jason has a few pickled cicadas, he could probably answer this better.

the Cicadas on the green are much darker than that pic. I have the most success just fishing a Chernobyl Ant through the cicada hatch. RAW ties a mean micro cicada. It is also very simple to tie... Heck, now that I think of it, I think T4X tied one for a swap, so it can't be that hard;) Keep in mind that the cicadas vary in size from year to year.

This year is the 17 year hatch correct?

I'm not sure what year it is on right now. The guys up on the Green probably have the exact info.
