Hi, I picked up some extended body BWO's at Trout Bum 2 in PC this week and had some good luck picking up a couple of finicky fish before the hatch started. I really like the looks of this fly, it's fairly similar to this one: http://shop.flyfishing.about.com/fly_archive/details/895.htm
Anyway, the big question is: Is an exended body necessary? And if so, anyone have a clearer description than in the above link as to how to tie it? I'm just too cheap to spend that much on flies all the time :)
I can try to get a photo of one of the flys I purchased, they are nice. Maybe one of you guys tied it!

would be that useful for a BWO or PMD or any other mayflie of size 14 or smaller. some of the larger mayflies such as drunella grandis do sit on the water with a extended tail that makes tying an extended body on them worthwhile. but i would prefer to spend my time just tying MORE BWO flies since they seem to get torn up so fast instead of spending more time tying fewer.

I have been using extended body BWO's. I use these before I use a "normal" BWO. This pattern has produced larger trout overall than other dries for me. If the trout are rising heavily this pattern is likely to work and they usually hit it hard. I buy mine at Hooked.

For some reason I can't get the link to work correctly. I have tied several patterns using the extended body and caught several fish. I also have patterns for the same hatch without extended bodies. Without seeing the pattern I can't know for sure what you are looking at. But here is what I do for my extended body patterns:
First cut a bunch of elk hair in the color desired. Fro BWOs I use olive elk hair. Then tie it in about half way between the eye and the barb. Once the elk hair is tied in wrap one time under the elk hair. This will help it to stand up. Then hold the tip of the elk hair and wrap to the end of the elk hair. When you get near the end wrap 3-4 wraps to secure it then wrap back. I then apply head cement to make sure the thread does not come loose. If you have enough elk hair on the hook the elk hair can also be used for the thorax. Otherwise dub a thorak. I usually tie extended body patterns parachute style because they are more likely to float upright. For hackle on this pattern I use olive grizzly.
Hope this helps.

Sorry about the link, I had an extra period in there, but it should be working now. I totally understand about time on the vise, my standard BWO's take long enough! I really do think this pattern gave me more looks than my standards, and yes the one I was using was parachute.
Thanks for the responses.

Has anyone tried the pre-made Stalcup's Extended Bodies?
