What is everyone's opinion on the type of thread used for this fly. Does using a thread that makes a nice segmentation really make a difference?
Thanks for any input!

What are you using now? Have you tried Coats and Clark sewing thread?
Here is a link I found.

Thanks for the info!
I've been using 6/0, doubling it and then kinda twisting it. But it just doesn't look quite right. I'll try the thread you mentioned!!

I have a couple of buddies that have fished with Andy Kim and were totally sold on the technique and the flies. I fought with the thread thing for a while. I was buying every kind of brown thread I could find. I finally found a thinner floss at KMart that worked pretty well. The link that Trout4X gave is right on the money. Spread the floss out to get a flat underbody to get you to the bend of the hook, then twist it to get the fat segmented thread body. I have had pretty good success on the Provo with mine.

Rod building thread also works great to create that segmented look........

I have had good success with the Coats and Clark thread Andy Kim recommends. You can get it at your local fabric/sewing shop. You can get it in all variety of colors. This is such as easy pattern to tie up, and I have actually had decent success on tail-water fisheries such as the Green and the Ferry. I seined some midge pupae on the Green in late March and compared them to this pattern. Its amazing how well it matched the profile of the naturals! Good luck!

Order some from yong-special.com and imitate them with various threads. Fish your imitation side by side with his when the fish will take midge larvae. The results might surpise you.

Coats and Clark is the way to go. My wife thought I was crazy when I told her I would be glad to go to the craft store with her. Then she soon realized my true intention. I fished with Andy Kim personally about 6-8 years ago on the Green. It was when I first started flyfishing. I did not know anything but that man could catch fish. After not using his flies for years I finally started tying yong's again. I have had good succes with them in summer brown, olive, red, and cream. All with the black thread head. Or I really like finishing the head with a little black crystal dubbing. I think the real key to the succes of this fly is the thread and twisting it clockwise (tight) before wrapping up toward the eye of the hook. It really does give it a cool look. I caught several bowns with these on the ogden last week. Good luck. TS
Chuck the "String-Thing" and tie on a parachute adams.
Or a Hackle Stacker.

I once saw him get his keys out of his locked car with an Adams. I think he uses them to pick up chicks as well!
I also used a dozen parachute adams to wipe up the mess in my truck that resulted when some guy left a bag of ice in the front seat. Then locked the keys inside.
Whoops, thread Hijack....

Speaking of hackle-stackers, I tied some up last night (without a gallows tool) and they look nice. Guess I'll try them out on the Green tomorrow.

"Here is a link I found."
And that's why I will never buy a subscription to Fly Fisherman magazine. That is THE worst web site I have ever been to. Look at the mess they made of the article on the Yong Special.

I use the Dyna-king, and have been very happy with it, but I don't think it would be very helpful with Yong's (trying not to continue the hijack).

I subscribe to the mag, but I'm with you on the site - it used to be such a nice site too, but now it looks like the national inquireer.........

That whole website is so constantly screwed up, it's just too frustrating, so I have forbidden myself from every buying anything that will support the magazine. Any corporation that is that incompetent deserves to go bankrupt, and I hope to have a hand in sending them on their way.
