View Full Version : Big Dry Fly Swap

Sark

I was Wondering if anyone would be up to a big dry fly swap, such as Beetles, Cicadas,Stoneflies, Hoppers, Crickets,Atractors, etc... With Summer around the corner and the large dry fly madness on the Green. I was wanting to restock my big fly box with some new variations( I love fishing the Green with huge dries you can see sixty feet away). I have a week long trip to the Green every summer around early june. And I'm getting pumped for it already. Anyway I have never ran a fly swap before but have participated, so a little help would be great. I know big flies can be alot of work so 15-20 people would be the max. I would probably tie the old standby a chernobyl (spelling?) ant or possibly something different like a deer hair wooley etc.. Hopefully some of you guys will be interested.

You can count me in. After fishing tiny midges for the past few months I can't wait to start throwing big hairy dry flies.

Well, since my swap didn't really pan out as I had hoped, I guess I will join this one. Hopefully, more people will join.

I am in if I can tie Madam Xs.

sign me up for a royal bugmeisther if I can figure out how to tye it. I got it off of another swap, and it looks like a great fly.

I'm in too. How big do the flies have to be -- to be considered a "Big Fly"? Let me think...oooohh, I'll tie some cicadas. Yeah, that would be the ticket -- big flies, too.

I would like to be in keep me posted on when and where to send them.

I think I'll tie a Royal Stimulator.

I think early to mid May would be a good time. Thats when some of the big guys start to show up. We'll say no later than the fifteenth, does that give everbody enough time. Remember to send your flies in some kind of mail proof container so they dont get squished. My adress is as follows.

Suite 103
670 East 3900 South Suite
Salt Lake City, UT 84107

Each fly should have a label with at least the tyers name and the name of the fly. Reciepe would be good too if you can if not. I can print some out for you. This should be a great swap.

solowookie
04-16-2003, 05:38 PM
so - how many flies each?

Sark
04-16-2003, 07:02 PM
Well that depends on how many people sign up, right now were up to eight , I think. But well put the limit on fifteen tyers so we dont have to tie into the wee hours of the night. Well also say sign up deadline is May 1st. and Try to have your fly picked out by then so we can list them.

Sark

FlySmyth
04-16-2003, 11:04 PM
Might I suggest a closer sign up deadline and a real soon finish date.

A sooner than May 1st sign up date because if they want in they probably already are.

A soon-thereafter finish date because it wont be many flies.

But mostly the wait kills me. I sent in my nftfohs flies what seems like an eternity ago and cant wait to see the others patterns that are coming via return mail.

Anyway I will abide by your decision.

Ken "The Fly Smyth" Raddon.

Sark

If everyone agrees, and has the time we can move the date up. Maybe april 25th for sign up May 1st or 2nd for flies in. It's up to you guys.

I'll join with a beetle since Huck the meat keeps canceling his swap.

seabass

It would definitely help me out if we could at least delay the "flies in" deadline until the 6th or 7th of May. These next couple weeks are "dead week" and then finals week at USU. But if the majority of participants prefer an earlier deadline, I'll still get them done. Just thought I'd throw in my $.02.

shazerblaze
04-17-2003, 04:05 AM
Due date by the end of April-ish and the due date by May 10 or so. That seems okay, but it's up to you Sark. Again, I'm in for the cicada. Looking forward to it. Come on guys, more people. Hey Sark, how many so far?

Hopper Luv
04-17-2003, 03:25 PM
I'm in I will tie some type of Hopper Pattern that no one else is tieing.

Sark
04-21-2003, 04:45 PM
Up to ten people now including myself. Well stick to the original deadlines, but the sooner I get all the flies the sooner I'll mail them out. So start tying away.

I'm not sure if there are any slots left, but if there are, I'd like to join. A guy at the show in Idaho Falls was tying stimulators with bodies made from Caddis Green Ice Dub. He claimed they kicked butt on the snake river at Jackson. If I'm in, thats what I'll tie. If I'm not in, they all go in my "Jackson Box".

Your both welcome to join. That leaves three spots left ...I think.
As to size anything you would consider large, When I think large I generally Think size 12 or 14 and bigger.

Hey Sark, I've got to pull out of this swap. I just started my surgery rotation, and I have barely any time to tie. I only have time to tie sutures and jazz. That isn't nearly as fun as tying flies. I'm terribly sorry. Enjoy the swap!

LBM
04-30-2003, 06:05 PM
Sark, is this swap a go? How many flies? Deadlines? Who made the final list? Where do we send them?

Does a size 16 beetle qualify?

I can tie it bigger if not.

Ken.

Sark

I think a size 16 is fine, it's still a terrestrial so go for it.

Sark
05-08-2003, 05:25 PM
I have yet to recieve any flies. I hope they are all on their way soon because, cicadas and terrestrials are starting to show up. Actually I'm going to the Green this weekend and was hoping to try to get a few on some big flies.

Keep on tying

I sent mine out yesterday. I tied sort of a stimulator, nicknamed the t.s. elliott.

I didn't put my handle, huck_the_meat on in the parcel, so mine are the ones from Ryan Elliott.

Let me know when you recieve them, as I sent them priority.

I too am looking forward to the flies in return.

Sark
05-15-2003, 05:28 PM
Ken sorry For butchering your name. I see now quite clearly thats what it says on the package. I must have been in a hurry when I looked at your package. Whoops. Half of the flies are in so far so hopefully the rest will get here in the next couple of days. So I can get everyones flies in the mail.

Sark

PS anyone interested in hitting the green in early june to try some of the critters out?

huck_the_meat
05-15-2003, 06:03 PM
I dunno if I put my UOTF handle on the package, but my name is Ryan Elliott, and of course my handle is huck_the_meat

I hope the other flies come soon....It is pretty far past the deadline, I think that overdue tiers should be penalized such as doubling the flies that they had to tie. Hint Hint...Sarcasm

Señorfish
05-16-2003, 02:36 PM
Sark, Maybe you should make a list of whose flies have made it in.
By the way did mine arrive yet? I mailed them on 5/13

FlySmyth
05-16-2003, 04:58 PM
Sark,

Make that list public so that we can publicly harass the non-compliant parties.

what is the status of this swap please?

9ftRod
05-23-2003, 04:00 PM
Hey everyone Sark is out of town and has been for the last week.

I looked at all the packages and here are the return names that have arrived, If you do not see your name your the reason the flies have not been shipped so get tying.

R. Hepworth
D. Long
Bluemel
Seabass
Brandon Thomas
Manlum
Ryan Elliot
Ken Raddon

Sorry for any misspelling, but last I heard him say there were 11 people in this swap so I think 2 packages are missing.

hookem_cookem

Just wondering what the swap status is ... have all the flies made it in yet? The big bugs are starting to show, I'd like to try some of these babies out.

P.S. Sark, I sent you a message with my mailing address. If you didn't receive it, let me know.

solowookie
05-27-2003, 07:49 PM
well - if I count correctly here are 8 names on the list, and we all tyed 8 flies... that means sark has just got to tye his, and distribute the flies...

I will all of you in echoing my desire to get these big bugs, and try them out!

Sark
05-27-2003, 07:51 PM
Unfortunately were still missing a couple flies . But I can Wait no longer. The Flies that are in go out tomorrow. Thank you everyone who got your flies in, they all look great. Would have made the call a couple days ago but got called out of town on the 15th when the flies were all supposed to be here. Sorry you guys had to wait so long. And we actually were supposed to tye ten flies originally for a total of 11 participants including myself. And my flies have been sitting here finished since the 1st of may.
