One of the ways around the extra steps of tying extended bodies is to use Mustad #94831 (2xL), #9574 (1/2" L) and #94720 (8xL) hooks.

One of the reasons for tying an extended body dry fly is for less hook weight. They may also give some flies a little more realistic sillouette. Other than this using longer hooks would work just fine.
