I have seen a few guys tie with dubbing instead of herl on brassies and other flys too.

Is that because it's more durable?

Is it just easier?

Why do you do it or think others do?

Ken.

Makes no difference to the fish. Durability might be an issue if you don't reinforce the herl. Ease of use it probably a bigger reason.

To each his own.

Really?! I thought I was being original, oh well. I got some nice dark foresty green looking dubbing and used it on Ultra-Wire Brassies. Only had one hook-up on it so far though.

doesn't matter, thread is becoming more popular to me on all my midge flies, even Brassies (black thread for the thorax--although it did take me awhile to figure out what a brassie was--Inside Joke).

Sometimes I use ice dub on my flies too!

I don't really use brassies anymore. I think the same concept applies to zebras. I have started using more thread and beads rather than herl on zebras.

If you think about it, a big head made out of herl or a big bead for a midge larvae doesn't make a lot of sense. If you look at them, they have really small heads.

Whatever works I guess.

Seems like herl is just a given, seems like it is used on every fly. Yes this is a slight exaggeration. Just seems that way.

Because that's the way the originator created it.....

...with Curtis Fry. I always reinforce the herl on my nymphs with thread. If you have a dubbing brush machine you can make peacock herl dubbing brushes for flies down to #24 if you use small enough wire (.0025 see www.justflytying.com). I know it has drastically improved the durability for my copper johns.

Or, you could split the difference and use Arizona Peacock dubbing.
