That's a good question, because people tie them in so many different ways.
The RS2 I like has rusty dun thread, gray dubbing, white CDC puff, dun micro fibbet split tail, and a size 20-24 TMC 100 hook. Other people will substitute the CDC puff with webbing from partridge or some other feather. It's cheaper that way. I have also used black and olive RS2s, but gray seems to be the best for me.
The WD40 I like is just woodduck feathers for the tail, olive dun thread, gray olive dubbing, mylar for the shellback, on a size 16-20 TMC 2457 hook. I have also tried brown, gray, and red, but olive has been the best producer. Some people add a tungsten bead.
Fun patterns to fish.

thanks everybody...
I'm going to whip some of these up. I'm almost out of hook though LOL - I need to be REAL sparce until I can get some replacements ordered.

Both patterns (WD40 and RS2) are great for Baetis emergers (and nymphs too). I've fished both patterns for a number of years and they are great.
Like Fred says, there are tons of variations so don't get too caught up in using the "exact" materials. Just use what you have, keeping in mind what the flies are used for.

I am seeing a lot of different hook sizes on this RS2. what size is everybody tying this fly?

I tie 18-20 wish I had some smaller on Saturday. I will add a few more to my box now.

Almost exclusively #20's and #22's (for the Provo and Green). Suppose 18's would work too, but I usually tie smaller. Obviously it depends on the hatch you're fishing and the size of the naturals.

#22's and #24's.

This may be a basic question, and I am showing my entomology ignorance with this, but what hatches are we trying to match with this fly?
I assume some kind of midge, but then again I assumed that Arizona was going to win the NCAA this year.
Thanks,

The RS2 has such a basic design that it can imitate any midge or mayfly emerger. Lengthen the wing to imitate a caddis. I believe CDC is a 'must' for this pattern.

I try BWO hatches, but I haven't been successful so far--then again I only nymph about 10 minutes a year.
I've had more luck bouncing the WD40 off the bottom than anywhere else. If you ever seine, you will see it is a dead ringer for a baetis nymph.
The RS2 can be fished anywhere. Even on the surface. Due to the fact that it has a long split tail, the fish probably take it for a mayfly nymph.

oh - I've got some tied up & ready to go saturday!! I'm got WD-40's in olive & gray 18 and 20, and then Ive also got RS2's size 20 in olive and gray.
I really like the way the wd40's look in olive.

I use RS-2's all of the time. I use it for both baetis and midges. When fishing it as a midge, I cut the tail off.

Call me crazy, but I don't tie RS2's with a tail at all. Fish don't seem to be bothered, plus it makes for an easier tie.
