My wife is having our baby on friday so im going to take a week off and I want to spend as much time as I can tying flies. I think that I'm going to build a nice fly tying bench with all the bells and whistles while I have the time. Does any one have any idea of where I could buy some plans or does anyone have some plans. I been using somthing very basic it is called the table and brother has a bench that he uses and likes. I don't want copy what he has because I might want more options but I guess if it comes down to it I will.

"wife having baby" + "spending as much time tying as possible" = Danger Will Rogers! Danger!

Are you looking for a bench or a whole desk? These sites have some pretty cool designs:

and she will have twins!! Think of the flies!
i like that third site style (made2fly). looks cool and functional (and not too pricey). The others look too cluttered and "special": i would feel bad about spilling glue, etc, on them.

I built my own tying station with a type of drafting table I was given. Then I added plastic drawers, pegboard, thread holders and a tool rack. It's great and didn't cost me an arm and a leg. The pegboard is nice because a lot of fly tying materials come with those little holes for hanging stuff up in the fly shop. I do the same thing on my table. Works great. Home Depot has a ton of different do-dads to add to a pegboard.
I'll see if I can drum up a photo of my tying area if you want.

Are you looking for a portable unit or a fixed position?

I bought one at SW for about 50 bucks, got home and opened it up, thought what a P.O.S., made a few sketches, & returned it.
Three days and $30 later I had a nice custom oak bench that fits my needs and I'm a total woodworking novice. A friend advised me a bit on glueing/screwing it together.
I started w/ the sketches I made & looked at a few others on-line, added more spool storage, more hooks for hanging stuff, tons of holes for all the other crap - bodkins, HH tools, etc., a mounting hole for a light, then mirror-imaged the plans since I'm a leftie.
A light oak stain and satin P/U finish rather than high-gloss makes it easy on the eyes. Felt on the entire bottom makes it easy on other furniture.
I'm kind of proud of it!
