I am thinking of fishing on Saturday. Has anyone fished it since ice off? Would Minersville would be worth the drive? If I do go, (I would head there from St. George) can someone tell me if it would be faster to cut through the Enoch Exit North of Cedar, or continue til Beaver and head West from there? (I've never been) Thanks for any info.

Mr. Loopy, I haven't been recently, but my brother-in-law has. He has had success fishing close to shore using wooly buggers (not lots of fish, but some really nice ones). I have always loved fishing Minersville this time of year...if you can find fish, it can be red hot! Take the Enoch exit and head for the town of Minersville--it will be much faster this way. Also, I may be interested in heading down there this weekend too...maybe we could hook up!

I don't mean to invite myself but I might be up to heading down this weekend as well. If you guys don't mind. I will be coming from the north though. Let me know if you guys are going.

I can probably swing it. I am driving from southern Utah County if anyone from Utah County or the Salt Lake area want to share a ride.

Mr. Loopy, I am not sure if I am in or not...I am trying to decide between fishing and the NCAA tournament in Salt Lake...I won't know until tomorrow.

Mr. Loopy

It is my understanding that the quickest rout to Minersville is to take the Enoch exit and getting on Highway 130 and your there in a half hour.

Let me know how you do up there, I'm interested to know. I know that there are some big hawgs in there.

FISH ON!

Bummer.

W2U-
Are you going up North or fishing? If you are going up North, what part of the lake should I fish? Is there anywhere to park that you don't have to pay the $4 fee?

Mr. Loopy, did you go? How was it?

Yea I went Saturday morning til about noon. It was SSLLLLOOOOWWWW! I didn't catch anything. I didn't see anyone catch anything. The water was super murky. I had never been there before. It was kind of a bummer. There were about 4 home town boys throwing bait, and they weren't catching anything either!

Mr. Loopy, were you sure they were throwing bait...many of the locals use a pretty unique technique--they throw out a fly dangling from a bobber and then prop it up like bait. They just let the wind blow the bobber around and wait for a strike.

W2U-

I figure a lot of guys use a fly and a bobber there. But, I am pretty sure I saw a powerbait jar right by the lawn chair one of these guys was sitting on. Did you make it up to the games?

Loopy,
I wouldn't feel too bad about the slow fishing at Minersville. I had similiar luck there a couple of weeks ago. The water was very cold and off color then too. EARLY Spring fishing is really hit and miss. The water is usually so cold and off color that fishing is just plain tough. Sure some guys will hit it just right on just the right day. But I would wait until Mid-April when the water gets up around 48 degrees or so and the insects start coming to life. The fishing will pick up.

Loopy, my brother-in-law was at Minersville yesterday, too...he said that he didn't catch any fish from his tube, but he did really well casting from shore. From my experience at Minersville, this time of year is excellent if you fish rocky points or places where rainbows might congregate to spawn. Generally, many people find this time of year tough because they are not actively seeking aggressive fish...the months of March, April, and May are usually the months that fish in Minersville tend to grow the most. Murky water at the lake is an excellent sign this time of year...it means that the reservoir is filling and lots of food is in the water. To be successfull, you have to find spawning rainbows; otherwise, you are throwing flies to fish filling themselves full of plankton.

I remember a few years back, during a high water year when the lake level was up pretty good at Minersville, I did really good right at the boat ramp. I gunned it from shore and fished about two paces left of the boat ramp in waist deep water. There was a ton of spawning rainbows congregated in that pea sized gravel just off the ramp. But I couldn't locate them this year. The lake is so damned low!!
