Anyone fished Mantua since ice off? Fishing good or bad?

If your name is Dennis, the fishing was excellent, if your name is Cheech, the fishing was mediocre, and if your name is MWSpearo, the fishing sucked. Talk to Dennis about getting his damsel pattern. It was a killer.

I'm not into tying my own flies yet. What does the damsel pattern look like- typical damsel pattern?

Did you catch any of the Kamloops? How big are they?

Last Sat. was pretty good. Good crowd too. Soft hackle hare's ear worked well. At least that's what I heard.

I do not judge my day fishing by my fish count but rather by the experience of the day as a whole....

It was a beautiful day. The weather was nice with an occasional cloud whipping through the sky. The water was a brisk 37. I even say a bald eagle over the far side of the lake.

Yes the damsel pattern is what was working. At least this is what Dennis and Cheech said. I didn't bother to put one on.

The only thing I would have changed is accepting Cheechs' offer to help with gas. Foolish me I thought he ment to put in the gas tank!

It was a warm ride home.

Bosox- Look at the Bass Flies section of this site. You will see a decent damsel imitation. As far as kamloops, I didn't handle the fish enough to know. I release them from a foot under water.

One of the people fishing from shore was doing quite well with Pheasant tails under a strike indicator. When the sun was high the damsel fished almost on the bottom and a slow retrieve worked well. As the sun dropped they started hitting the CBS Leech, still deep but a little faster retrieve. Most of the fish I caught were in 7-9 1/2 feet of water. I really didn't pay any attention to whether tey were kamloops either, released most in the water with Cheech's killer release tool.

Looks like you caught about as many fish as I did on Saturday. LOL

The biggest thing I caught was my motor. Genius!

What is this new "must have" tool?

Very technical and Highly classified. It is basically wood lathed out with an eyelet on the end. They are 12" long for stillwater, and about 6" long for streams. We are going to start selling them for about $5 to $8. Or you can make your own. I have been using them for the last few weeks, and they are absolutely awesome. I don't carry a net anymore, and I don't need to pinch down the barb to get the hooks out easily. The small ones work down to the VERY small sizes, and the big ones are best for stillwater sized flies.

I got a couple. The biggest unfortunately I had to give a ride home! Man he stinks.

Cheech- is this the wooden dowel with a tea cup holder screwed in the end ?? I know mine works great- though it must be on 5x or larger tippet.

Crosby- That's pretty much it. I have used mine on 6x and it has no problems. I polished out the inside of the eyelet so it causes no abrasions.

Yeah- there was a guy years ago in Oregon that showed me that- they work slick- I immediatley went and made about 20 or so-
gave 1/2 of them away- but still carry a couple in the toon and a couple in the chest pack.

I can picture a dowel with a teacup holder drilled into the end, but how does it work?

By pushing the wooden handle up against the leader, then pull toward you sliding the line down to the opening in the "eye". Next slide the eye down the line to the fly and off it comes.

It is much quicker to do than explain.

What makes it easy to use is that you don't have to line up the line with any slots or openings.

I went the Saturday during ice-off and the Friday after that. I caught one 17 inch kamloop Saturday by the ice across from the inlet. I caught several rainbows on the Friday by the boat ramp including this 19 1/2" beauty.

http://www.flyfishermanforum.com/attachment.php?postid=833

A large egg sucking leech took the kamloop. A wooly worm took the big bow and a 15 inch bow. A smaller egg sucking leech took several bows averaging 15 inches. I put the wooly worm on when heading in. I probably could have caught several other rainbows with it.

The kamloop gave the biggest fight by far. Absolutely no comparison. You will know when you have a kamloop on.

I don't even think Cheech's release tool would have helped Teewinot out. I think he did it on purpose so he could have an excuse to go.

It was a nice day, calm water clear sky and spending the morning with Teewinot what more could anyone ask for.

I was lucky enough to catch 2 bows saturday morning. The first one was about 17" and the second one was 14". Both fish took a black leech. The water was cold too, darn cold. My dad brought his non-isulated waders and lasted about 1 hour.

I hope to make it out tomorrow night.
