As I have been planning my attack on some of these species, I've been thinking about what times of the year are my best chance at certain species.

For example, Spawn times for fish like white bass, crappie, walleye...etc. For some of these fish it may be the only time I will have a shot at catching one on a fly.

I still have a lot of research to do because many of these species I have never fished for, but do any of you have some suggested timeframes to expect the most success on a specific species?

How about night fishing? During the hot summer months, is there a better chance of catching some these fish after midnight?

Stout.....

White bass action can be good from late fall through spring. These are schooling fish that come and go so action can be great one day and horrible the next.

Walleye fishing depends on which water you want to hit. Utah Lake is the first to go. Then Willard Bay, and the higher elevation lakes last. Deer Creek for example fishes best for me after the spawn. Fish it late in the summer, and late in the day to the early a.m.

Crappie are temperature sensitive also. Pineview is the best bet locally to get good crappie action. They can be caught through the ice right now but the best flyrod action is in May.

See if you can find a copy of "Beyond Trout". I think it is out of print now but there may be some copies hiding in a shop somewhere. This book has lots of great info about water temps, forage and structure.

Let me know if you have any specific questions, I'll try to help if I can...............

I must say that I'm excited like a kid for Christmas! I'm looking forward to you talking showing us some Muskie flies and talking about fishing for them!

oh boy! oh boy!

Night time:

Big ol treble hook and chicken liver on your fly rod, add a little hackle to your treble hook if you want to really feel good about catching it on your fly rod!

And Hang on!

I've never heard of anyone catching walleye on a fly rod. They are a cool game fish. I've never seen one in person. Anybody here go after walleye with a fly rod? I'm pretty close to Willard and would like to give it a try now that I have a pontoon boat. Of course a REAL boat would be a lot better for this.

Walleye......

I am yet to catch a walleye in Willard. I have caught every other species in there on a fly, but the stealthy walleye has eluded me...

I have caught them other places. Deer Creek Res. has a decent population. Wait til the water warms up then fish the late evening or early morning hours. I usually catch mine after chasing smallmouth for the afternoon. Stay til after dark, but the best time is about the last hour of light. Starvation has loads of walleye. Not necessarily the largest fish around, but there is the occasional BIG walleye from Starvation. Utah Lake, and Yuba also have good populations. Yuba is in the "crash" part of its walleye cycle, but some healthy fish still remain......

Try chartreuse or white krystal buggers or clouser minnows. Fish with a full sink line and with weighted flies. Walleye are structure oriented fish that hug the bottom. Clousers are great for this type of fishing due to the up turned hook.

Good luck.........
