I thought I'd get this started by listing the species we've chosen and the assigned value or score. If you catch one of every specie it should add up to 100 points. The goal is to see how many points (max 100) you can attain during 2003.

Species Value
Brown Trout 1
Rainbow Trout 1
Cutthroat Trout 1
Brook Trout 2
Lake Trout 7
Splake Trout 6
Tiger Trout 6
Grayling 6
Mountain Whitefish 1
Kokanee 6
Crappie 2
Perch 3
Bluegill 2
Green Sunfish 3
White bass 4
Wiper 6
Small Mouth Bass 2
Large Mouth Bass 3
Walleye 7
Catfish 6
Striped Bass 8
Carp 7
Tiger Muskie 10

What about Utah Suckers?

I didn't think there was anywhere in Utah, except the colorado river where you could catch a Pike... then I saw some posts and realized I was wrong. It should probably be added...but the total still needs to equal 100 so perhaps points need to be redistributed... Or, it could simply fall into the Muskie category.

What do you think Jason?

We are all Utah Suckers!!!!!!!!!

We could have a few unlisted species as 'BONUS' points. If you can catch a Pike in Utah, go for it. I haven't found a location that have Pike, just muskie. Utah Sucker should definitely be a BONUS catch. How about -5 points just for Fred.

The Lower Green River by Vernal has produced some absolute monster Pike. My Bro is in the middle of scouting it out for me.

Redmond Reservoir, Yuba Lake, Lake Powell, the Colorado River, the Sevier River, and the Green River (lower) all have pike...

A word on fish values:

IMO you have the value of stripers and wipers too high.
smallmouth and largemouth should be flipped.
Perch is too high.
there is more than one kind of catfish, you've got 4 species of bass, but only 1 cat.

just some thoughts.

100 points in a year? I have gone over the list and I only have 23 points in my life! I guess I need to branch out a little and try some new species. Problem is, I'm a slow learner. My goal will be to try and get to 35 points this year. Maybe by the time I reach 60 my points will match my age but I doubt it! My hat is off to anyone that accomplishes this in a single year. I cannot even imagine being in that class of fisherman.

I agree some of the fish values could be higher or lower. Grayling, 50+ fish days at Fish lake in the uintas, Two fish on at a time. Tigers trout should be a 1. I don't know if the values also take into account amount of time getting to the place or just difficulty catching the speices.
Sounds like fun and a lot of driving.

Bry,

Don't feel bad. Using that point system I would have scored a big 6 points last year. I guess I need to branch out again. I just can't seem to get off the creeks and rivers fishing for then purdy little trout.

Is the Albino Rainbow worth anything? After all, it is Utah's state fish.

What means of verification do you have in mind?

Photos?
Paintings?
eye wittness accounts?
Or the trusting honesty of a fisherman? :)

It does sound fun and challanging.

What is in it for the winner? If nothing but claim to fame then I think honesty is fine, if it is a new Hummer better have a photo etc.

Speaking of paintings. Walks, when are you going to show us some of your trout paintings? A poet an artist. From what I hear Walks catches a trout and then sits down and paints it. Right Walks?

Yes, on occasion when I catch a new species, or a fish of good beauty and size. And when it is not too cold with enough daylite, I may paint their portaits. Then they are released.

Kind of like painting Flyfishers.

Maybe at the flytyer meeting, if I remember.

A little embarrising, but I hooked a 6 inch goldfish the other day at lunch on a local pond on a prince nymph. How many points is that!

Correct me if I am wrong but aren't Gold Fish a type of Carp? so you should get 7 points from that right??

Crimedog,

Remember you have to actually land the fish.

You bet he was landed! Even had a witness. Trust me I've taken plenty of grief for it!

What size hook did you use? A 36!? And who tied the Phasant Nymp on hook small enough to catch a bleed'in Goldfish? My grandaughter cried to hear that you tortured her pet....

What an animal!

Rod Hog

How can you in good conscience take more points than the fish was long? Seven points for a six inch carp sounds pretty generous. Ha ha.

Dave,
Somebody told me they planted Mac's in that little goldfish pond
Is that true?

Jason-Seeing that Baetis tried to embareass me Saturday with it, and since Junge, Mr. Loopy and you saw the picture (beat you on size Utah Dave) how much for a red shiner.
