View Full Version : Not for the faint of Heart SWAP!

Trout4x
02-04-2003, 03:53 AM
I am thinking, notice the word thinking about a swap. 25 or more people with a 2 fly per person making that 50 flies. Any interest in doing this? The deadline would be a few months away.

Let me know by posting. I have always wanted to do a 100 person swap but I need to convince 99 others.

Right now this is just to see who might be interested.

You got too much damn time on your hands!

Ouzel
02-04-2003, 04:21 AM
Lawrence of Logan.
If you did get that many (25) to commit to 2/entry you might then find 100 would be out of the question.
Seems that many will sign up but few will deliver; on time or at all.

hookem_cookem

given enough time i think this would be a cool swap. 25 people with 2 flies a peace would be easier than 100 people and a 100 flies.

I would be interested in a 2 fly swap.

Larry just think what I would do if I was retired. (LOL)

One rule should apply, no griffith gnats, phtails, sow bugs, san juan worms, glo bugs or simple, easy no-brainer un-unique patterns. If I was to participate in a swap this big I'd want to get some cool unique patterns out of it.

I'm in. I agree with Jason though, no easy stuff.

crimedog

I think I will just make up my own fly for this swap. haha since I have never tied a fly in my life. It could be very Unique

Phlyfisher
02-04-2003, 04:00 PM
If I think of something to tie, I'd do it. There's no way I'm putting tags on all of those flies though.

cheech
02-04-2003, 04:04 PM
There's an idea. I can do 100 glow bugs in about 20 minutes. Thanks to the super duper glo bug dispenser. I would definately be in. I might even do my new crawdad.

Mr. T
02-04-2003, 04:57 PM
How do I get ahold of a "Super Duper Glo Bug Dispenser" :-0

Have you got a Crawdad dispenser, or is that one in the works! LOL

cheech
02-04-2003, 05:07 PM
Mr. T - If you are serious about the Glo bug dispenser, I can show you a way to tie a perfect glo bug in about 15 seconds. It's kind of like Velveeta in a syringe. The Crawdad dispenser is strictly confidential.

Trouty
02-04-2003, 06:25 PM
Cheech, I'm serious about the Glo-bug dispenser. I'd like to see it sometime. I've got a great crawdad dispenser. A chicken leg at Strawberry. In about 5 mintues I can have a dozen of the most realistic crawdads you've ever seen.

T4X - I would probably be interested as well. I'm not sure if I could tie anything that Jason hasn't seen before but maybe I could find something he would agree upon.

steelie
02-04-2003, 07:09 PM
I use a thin straw, feed a couple of lengths of yarn through, can time them up in no time flat.

Trout4x
02-04-2003, 10:45 PM
All that are concerned..

Time frame would be 3 to 4 months, I want to include anybody and everyone that wants to tie, slow or fast. that is less than 1 fly a day. Anyone can do that.

That would still allow good dry fly seasons etc..

Phlyfisher
02-04-2003, 10:56 PM
Okay, we get it...3-4 months. Here's a dispenser for you:

Did I mention 3-4 months?

mcgx2
02-05-2003, 12:26 AM
I would consider it, 3 to 4 months seems a little long though. We're talking May!!!

I agree with others...would have to be some unique flies tied.

Not picky, the only thing people don't want are Glo bugs and the very simple patterns other than that what ever you want to tie.

Trout4x
02-05-2003, 11:37 AM
Before it is called, I am tying a pattern I learned from the MASTER RAW, it is his chain stitched Mayfly, the second I think I will try a chain stitched glo bug. Not really on the second pattern.

I think by the time I finished with 25 I might have it done or I will be out of thread.

Does anybody have these patterns in thier arsenal?

Count me in. I don't know what I'll tie yet, but this is good incentive to get away from the easy stuff. But if do anything with Elk hair it will probably take me until Halloween.

bner
02-05-2003, 03:24 PM
.....count me in. Either I have a very short attention span or I just missed it, do we tie 2 different flies or 50 of the same fly. (I am a little slow, maybe dropped a couple times to many when younger.) I will get back on which pattern/s I will tie.

Phlyfisher
02-05-2003, 04:16 PM
My first fly I'm thinking will be a bitch creek. I put a little twist on it. I use glow-in-the-dark rubber legs. I call it "the glowing bitch." Still thinking about the second fly. Probably going to be a dry of some sort.

Fish a fly
02-05-2003, 05:27 PM
I'm in if it's not too late. I'll do a stonefly version of skip's nymph. Not quite sure on the second pattern though, probably something to do with stillwater.

Trout4x
02-05-2003, 07:02 PM
2 flies per person total of 50 could change depending on total participants. The 2 flies submitted should be different patterns.

MWSpearo
02-05-2003, 07:09 PM
Is this going to be themeless.

Fred
02-05-2003, 07:10 PM
If the two flies submitted were not different patterns, then it would be 100 flies of the same pattern ; )

When are you going to close this one.

Phlyfisher
02-05-2003, 08:26 PM
It's 50 flies total. 25 of one pattern and 25 another. Isn't that right 4x?

mcgx2
02-05-2003, 10:54 PM
OK, you talked me into it. One fly will be a Rogue Foam Giant Stone. I'll get back to you on the other.

mcg

Caddfly
02-05-2003, 10:56 PM
Ok, you got me. I've been saying no from the first, I have waaay too much going on, but "one fly a day" hooked me with the treble hook in the gut. The Red Ass (fly from Costa Rica, orginally from Missouri I believe) and DB Buggers will be my contribution. I have tons of beads left over from tying with Temple Fork Outfitters and I figure I'll use some of them up.

My only question is...T4X, the "Fly Swap??" thread has massive amounts of posts....how big is this one going to get? We're talking at least 1250 flies being put out for this swap...crazy.

Caddfly

Trout4x
02-05-2003, 10:59 PM
MWSpearo Yes you can tie any pattern.

Once again if we have 25 people in, @ 2 flies each total of 50 flies, you will send me 24 Glo Bugs & 24 Griffeth's Gnat, which have been banned from this swap that is an example. In return you should have 48 different very cool patterns to use.

Is this clear? If not ask any questions

First of all thanks, we now have 23 with 2 spots to fill. Which we will.

Really I don't personally think it matters if two people tie the same pattern because rarely are they exactly the same. I had 3 foam beetles in my last swap and every one of them was different.

By the way I wouldn't worry about receiving the rules. Trout4X will givem to ya if ya like it or not. ;)

A little on the long side but please read the entire post: Yes even if you are already signed up.

The only exception to the rules that have been set by others in this swap. I would be willing to include YOU, if this was your first swap and are new to tying.

What that means is that you could tie any two patterns that you feel confident in tying, except the glo bug. To make this clear right now we have 24 participants with nobody at this point backing out (right Jason). If we feel the 25th spot this is what would take place.

2 different fly patterns would be submitted to me.

24 red hot pattern A and 24 red hot pattern B a total of 48 flies.
and then in return you would receive 48 different fly patterns in return.

The deadline I am choosing will be May 24 a little over 3 months.
91 Days to be exact which equals to .5274 flies tied a day, which means that you could start and take a break and whip finish the next day and still be on track.

If you feel you qualify for the last spot please make a post and start tying.

If anyone has any questions please ask. I will email everyone "MY RULES"

First thing I need to do is have everyone confirm by sending me an email @ trout4xflyswaps@yahoo.com

Please in the subject header please type "Faint of Heart Swap"
this is the only way I can keep them all separate. Also when you email me please include your UOTF screen name.

If you know the patterns you will be tying please include in the email as well.

I think that will wrap this up, thanks again to everyone for participating, I couldn't do it without all of you!

Swaps are a blast and you do get some very cool patterns back in return.

The Luckiest Swapmeister,

I will be posting in a minute what people are tying and so far no one SJ worm or a zebra midge.

I think everyone will be satisfied.

It's been a killer along with the emerger style.

While I'm here I noticed you mentioned a green butt on an EHC. I too have been doing that for a few years and it works well. Especially when near the end of your drift when you pull it under.

I have been using Krenick(sp?) glow in the dark lime green for the butt.

I'll be doing 25 @ #16 BH Olive "Fox Poopahs" (already done) and 25 @ " a little fly up my sleave"...J/K...Not sure yet. I've been tying like a possessed madman trying little things here and there. It will most likely be a caddis of some kind or a terrestrial. Let you know when I decide. Will probably be done this weekend...not the best weather rolling in...

Well since no one took them I'll tie up the San Juans and the Zebra midges.......

Really I'm not sure, but they'll both be dry flies. I'm thinking baeitis, and Mothers Day Caddis imitation?

Just wondering ...... since MWSpearo decided Cheech was going to tie in this - does Cheech get to decide what flies MWSpearo will tie?

cheech
02-21-2003, 10:56 PM
That would never work out. I would have to choose zebra midges, and SJ worms so I wouldn't feel guilty.

Trout4x
02-21-2003, 10:57 PM
You could always tie the flies for him.

Trouty
02-21-2003, 10:58 PM
You're much kinder than I. I would have picked some big, lots-of-steps bass bugs for my good buddy. Come to think of it, my buddy hasn't called me in quite some time ......... :)

cheech
02-21-2003, 11:04 PM
That would be a false representation of MW's true tying skills.

Wooleybugger
02-21-2003, 11:22 PM
Ok my other fly will be a "wooleybugger" type fly ... that my fishing buddies have named "The Chut"...hey it works...and you will have to determine if it is purrrrtty or not...LOL

My other fly will be a parachute royal wulff with a bead. Fly_Fish_Boy, who hasn't posted yet, but registered, is my friend and he will tie a braided larva lace stonefly nymph and a glass prince nymph.

steelie
02-23-2003, 04:39 AM
I was actually just gonna buy a bunch of those sweet ones they sell at wal-mart, like maybe ust get a couple dozen of those wet fly 3 pc. assorted packs. As soon as they go on sale I'll let you know what I'm "tying".....

Thanks guys for letting me in. I will tying a stonefly nymph pattern that has a larva lace braided body. It's pretty sweet. Also a prince nymph that is altered a little that is killer on panfish and trout.

02-24-2003, 03:21 PM
Trout4X, I know the swap is closed and you have your 25, but if you think you might need a spare, I'd consider tying up Mormon Girls and Mallard Spiders. That is if you tell me you need a spare participant in case someone doesn't deliver for a thousand reasons. Let me know ....

Larry S.
02-24-2003, 03:56 PM
Are you going to run down to BYU and hogtie a few? LOL

Actually, a couple weeks ago I was doing a demo at a local assisted living center and met the grandaughter of the inventor of the Mormon Girl. I have to go back and talk to her some more as my memory is worse than some those there.

I do remember her last name was Wilson though.

cheech
02-24-2003, 04:00 PM
you better go prepared with plenty o' rope. Even for just a couple of em'.

D-Bell
02-24-2003, 06:34 PM
I was gonna use my version of Jack Dennis' receipe. If trout4X wants me in. As for going down to BYU....naah they'd arrest me on site cause of the cigar butt in my ashtray. The Mormon gals I've known had the rope anyways....

Need your help.

2 more have asked to join. I will leave it up to everyone. Should we let 2 more in? That would be a total of 4 more flies each.

I will bring it to the jury of 25.

Post your feelings and speak your mind.

I personally don't mind. Cast your vote.

Larry S.
02-25-2003, 12:11 AM

save it for the next swap. The door was shut before the 25. If we keep opening it up, we (some of us) will barely make the deadline.

Safe to say that there will be another swap...quite possibly before this one is even finished.....

J.

D-Bell
02-25-2003, 02:41 AM
X4trout en al. I was only proposing that I ty for the swap and be counted in ONLY IF one of the others ....for any of a thousand reasons, can not make it. A SPARE...a spare means a spare, as in running ground spare or airborne spare, or extra just in case, etc. Forget it... I have.

Trout4x
02-25-2003, 02:44 AM
If you want to be ready for a back up that is fine, I will keep you posted.

But lets get a few more responses before we say no.

02-25-2003, 02:53 AM
Nahhh.. it's OK buddy. Don't want to go where someone doesn't want me. Just trying to help out. Too much I reckon... FOAD to their loss.

There will be others and I'm already signed up for the big Bluegill hoe-down ...

But I'll do whatever. Does FOAD mean what I think it means?

Dennis
02-25-2003, 01:32 PM
I haven't sent my flies in yet so 2 more of each pattern is no big deal. Besides, 4X proposed this swap in "hopes" that he could get 25 people in. And now we're looking at 27. This is the "not for the faint of heart" swap. No big deal. He's welcome as far as I'm concerned.

D-Bell one last offer, are you sure? You are wanted by all.

FlySmyth I have not heard from you are you still wanting in?

Dennis
02-26-2003, 12:28 PM
I've finally decided what my 2nd pattern is. A "psychadelic P-Quad. This fly is used a lot in Canada but I, along with a couple of guys from Park City, use it a lot on the Provo. It can imitate a scud and also a caddis pupa.

FlySmyth
02-26-2003, 03:02 PM
Still very much wanting in.

I did email you late last night.

BTW Can we buy the flyes instead of tie them?

Just kidding.

Ken.

Trout4x
02-26-2003, 10:52 PM
Flysmyth you are in! Do you know your patterns?

I will send out "THE RULES" tonight now that everyone is in and confirmed!

FlySmyth
02-27-2003, 02:41 AM
My patterns are...

A bunny leech that Dennins taught me.

And a Sow pattern that Buddy at SW taught me. I may have to substitute a Rainbow Warrior instead if that thing gets too tough to tie. I have only started learning it.

Ken.

Trout4x
02-27-2003, 03:38 AM

T4x should post his rules BEFORE he announces his swaps. Then we would see who the "Faint o' Heart" are.

Teewinot tagged him well! ;o)
