View Full Version : Dry Fly swap

bcsort
12-14-2002, 07:39 PM
I think it's about time we have us a dry fly swap. I've been waiting far too long for someone else to start one. And on top of that I lost my dry fly box in October and haven't started filling a new one.

That is why I would like to see some of UOTF favorites. Your #1 dry fly from this summer, lets say.

5-10 flies and mabey a due date one month away. I assume we all have a little more time off over the next month.

bcsort - EZ Caddis
Trout4x - camparadun
Cheech - biot para PMD
Teewinot - CDC Royal Wulff
Cary - Confidence Quill
Idylab - Olive CDC caddis
Junge - ant pattern
Caddfly - Goddard caddis
LIV2FSH - Thorax PMD
FlyFisherPA - lime trude

You say a month away do you have a date in mind?

bcsort
12-15-2002, 05:31 AM
1 month from now is the 14th of January. So I think we shall make the due date the 14th. I hope you are in Trout4x. You see I need some support. What about you Teewinot and Cheech? Where is the return support?

I am more than willing to move the due date back a little if it will help get this swap off the ground.

Trout4x
12-15-2002, 07:35 AM
I am in!

I like that you are willing to make it longer, with the other swaps that are going. I have no problem with the time from moving back a week.

I have been busy almost every day with my cow elk hunt which runs till Jan 31st.

It has been nice tying a few more flies.

bcsort
12-15-2002, 02:51 PM
So let's make the due date Jan 21.

Do you have a patten in mind Trout4X.

Trout4x
12-15-2002, 06:06 PM
submit a comparadun

cheech
12-17-2002, 03:20 PM
I will tie a few. I decided to tie a biot para PMD. Definately my favortie of ALL time.

Cheech

Teewinot
12-17-2002, 03:28 PM
I'm in with a CDC Royal Wulff.

How many should I plan on tying?

Cary
12-17-2002, 03:34 PM
If its 10 or less, I'm in with my Confidence Quill. Any more, then I'll have to bow out.

-Cary

Teewinot
12-17-2002, 03:45 PM
I agree with Cary -- dry's take more time.

cheech
12-17-2002, 03:52 PM
Do deer hair bass bugs count as dry flies?

Cary
12-17-2002, 04:18 PM
Dude, if your willing to spin and shape a dozen bass bugs, Id say YES.

Note to bscort: bag this guy before he changes his mind!

Indylab
12-17-2002, 04:45 PM
I am in for an olive CDC caddis.

Junge
12-17-2002, 04:49 PM
I am in. I will tie an ant pattern.

Scott

nhancock
12-17-2002, 05:33 PM
My favorite is an elk hair caddis. I know it is fairly common but I caught more fish on that than any other dry fly this year. I even used it in late summer and early fall in size 10 and 12 as a hopper pattern.

cheech
12-17-2002, 06:12 PM
Cary- Bass bugs aren't really all that hard. I would say they are about as difficult to tie as a parachute adams. It just takes a little bit more time. Come to a UTOF meeting some time, and I'll show you a really easy technique.

I think I'm actually going to stick with the Para PMD. I'm already tying enough bass bugs for the bass swap. Those Tiemco 8089s can get a bit pricey.

Trout4x
12-17-2002, 06:31 PM
It started off slow, I am glad to see more interest.

Cary
12-17-2002, 06:34 PM
I think its more of the mess they make. I used to tie whitlocks DH frog when lived in SoCal, but havent messed with spinning hair much since then.

Hey Moke, ever fish Barrett Lake????

bcsort
12-17-2002, 10:06 PM
I have updated my original post so we can see who will be tying what.

Right now we are sitting at 8 participants. So I guess we should plan on 8 and see if anybody else wants in.

Caddfly
12-17-2002, 10:27 PM
Caddfly is in and will tie up some goddard caddis

LIV2FSH
12-18-2002, 07:00 AM
Alright I'm in with some Thorax PMD's!

Later, Bruce.

FlyFisherPA
12-19-2002, 03:32 PM
is there enough room to join this Swap, if so i will be tying a revised version of the lime trude. we would have to make 5-10 flies or is there a specific number? if not send me an e-mail at FlyFisherman428@aol.com

nhancock
12-19-2002, 06:32 PM
If it isn't too much trouble I would like to change the fly I am going to tie. I noticed there are several tying patterns. Though I am the only one tying a standard Elk Hair Caddis. Maybe I will tie a bunch of Griffiths Gnats. Or is that too simple of a pattern? I could tie 2 for everyone.

Trout4x
12-19-2002, 07:06 PM
If it that simple do a dozen for each of us.

Teewinot
12-19-2002, 07:33 PM
Why stop there, lets go for three dozen. You like tying right!?

nhancock
12-19-2002, 07:34 PM
Hooks still cost money.

bcsort
12-19-2002, 08:47 PM
Three dozen it is! ;~) JK

No, I don't have a problem with that.

FlyfisherPA,

I think we need to stay right at 10 participants or Cary will bow out. And I would really like to get a little confidence from him if you know what I mean. But if you want to tie up your patterns and be a "stand by," we may have room for you after all.

FlyFisherPA
12-19-2002, 09:15 PM
i will tie up them flies and be waiting for a "go" in send.
Thanks Again.

nhancock
12-24-2002, 04:35 PM
Unfortunately I am going out of town and will not have time to tie my flies for the swap. I apologize. Maybe nest time.

Trout4x
12-24-2002, 09:05 PM
Looks like FlyFisherPA can fill the void after all with nhancock
backing out.

Trout4x
12-29-2002, 10:12 PM
How many are in? 9 or 10?

Trout4x

bcsort
12-30-2002, 03:14 AM
As far as I know we are at 9, I will make contact with FlyFisherPA and see if he is in. If so, we will be at 10.

How is every one doing? I got about 40 flies tied up ready to go but I think I could make them just a little bit better.

Trout4x
12-31-2002, 01:50 PM
Hav e you sent info on where to mail the flies?

bcsort
12-31-2002, 02:25 PM

I recieved flies from LIV2FSH today and I must say Bruce you have improved on an already excellent recipe card. I don't know if I want to pull my fly off of it. I'll probably just hang it on the fridge.

LIV2FSH
01-11-2003, 06:47 AM
I'm glad you like them.

How did they make the mail trip? Did the addition of foam, keep the hackle from getting smashed?

Can't wait to see everybody's flies!

Tight lines, Bruce

Cary,
Can we get an update on those flies.........As much as I would love it I don't want the other tiers thinking I kept all their flies.

Hosting a swap I get that feeling every time.

02-02-2003, 04:38 AM
..on the other one you could field test them all and then just touch them up a bit and no one would be the wiser!

Indylab

Any news on when we will be getting our flies?

bcsort
02-03-2003, 10:03 PM
We are still waiting for Cary's flies. I last heard from him about a week and a half ago and he was going to send his flies as soon as he could.

I guess if they don't show up by Friday I will send out what I have and Cary can play "FEDEX MAN" with his flies. JK ;^)

Nice looking flies by the way..........except them EZ Caddis's......they're looking a little rough.

Trout4x
02-07-2003, 11:56 PM
So what is the Status? Have you heard from Cary?

bcsort
02-08-2003, 06:42 AM
I haven't heard from Cary so I will seperate flies tomorrow and send them out on Monday.

Thanks to all who joined..........and a special thanks out to those that allowed me to recall a BS favor. ;^)

LIV2FSH- I have to give you the golden star for the coolest card and fly. I don't dare take it apart.

Great flies guys. Hopefully I fish enough streams this year to try them out!

Bcsort, you ought to hold T4X's flies for an extra month to make him go legally insane!

Trout4x

I have his address and I am not afraid to use it. (LOL)

Bruce -- Nice set up.

Cary

Man, the guilt of not fulfilling a commitment to ten flyfishers you've never met is quite heady.

I'll put myself in FlySwap "Time out" for this one. I'll keep the sappy excuses to myself, I'll just say I lost control of my schedule.

I'll remember that I owe you guys for this one,

-Cary

Had a nice surprise waiting for me when I got home last night. Thanks to BCSort for running the swap.

Bruce, I like the magnetic card. My wife didn't find it funny when I put it on the fridge though.

Sorry I sent your extra flies to Indylab. I knew something wasn't right, I just couldn't figure it out.

What a score for Indylab?

Junge

No need to be sorry, I don't mind. Hope you enjoy them Indy.

Trout4x
02-13-2003, 09:54 PM
You really went over the top on this one. You have given me a great idea. I will have everyone send the 2 flies to you and you can label ALL of them and then you mail them to me and I will send them all out.

Just think they wouldn't let you in on the Stillwater swap, like I said their loss, my gain to have you in the "Not for the faint of Heart Swap"

Thanks to everyone for the flies and for bcsort for not making me wait by the mailbox for too long!
