View Full Version : Utah county fly tying club?

Is there any interest from any of the members in Utah County to get together to tie some flies? For as long as I have been visiting this site, I have never attended a fly tying club meeting. I may just have to drive to Salt Lake. If any one is interested I would be happy to arrange something. If not I guess I am going to have to join the Salt Lake fly tying club.

Let me know if anyone from Utah County is interested.

I e-mailed Jason B about that a few weeks ago. I think he was one of the people who was going to head that up. He said only a couple of people had ever contacted him but if there were a few he would be willing to set it up. He mentioned the first meeting could focus on Provo Winter Flies since that is a major waterway in Utah County.

Go to the Fly Tying Club section under club calendar and send him an e-mail. If enough people were interested something would probably be arranged. I don't think there is a fly shop that is holding the meetings in Utah County so it would probably be a little less consistent than the SL one.

As of the last 6 months no one has really done anything for Utah County tying club meetings. Jason B and Pathaws originally organized a few meetings in the beginning. If you'd like to start organizing a Utah County Club meeting every month and get some consistency, more people would probably show up. I know that there a bunch of guys that would like to go. The main thing is finding a place to meet every month and then plugging it on the site so the get the word out. Try looking into reserving a room at the local library or even talking to Anglers Inn in Provo. They might let you arrange something. Questions let me know.

Been a while since I've been here, but I had indicated that I have a basement that could serve as a Tying club meeting place. Pat's spread up at Vivian was really nice too.

For me Wednesday nights are probably best. Anyone else interested?

There are 4 or 5 people who are interested now. Jason B or Pathaws can we set a date? How many people do we need? Is 4 or 5 enough?

I have yet to begin what Im sure will become a lifelong adventure in tying, but hope to do so soon. Can I still come?

Let me know when the meeting will be and I will join you guys. I know we could use a meeting room at my work, although it in Spansih Fork and that might be too far south for everybody to drive. If you needed somewhere to meet in the afternoons we could meet here all the time. One of the rooms has a Prixima large screen projector that is connected to a VCR and there is a computer with the Internet available for our use. Just a thought. I would need to know a couple days in advance so I can reserve the rooms. They all have tables and chairs and fair to good lighting. Fishn

I am definitely there if we do it. The cabin is available, however the heat is down and tying to the warmth of that little fireplace, while it would be romantic, makes for chilly fingertips. A different location might suit us better during this cold spell, but it is there if we do choose to use it. Curits Fry's basement might be better this time. Wherever and pretty much whenever we set the time I will come.

I'd be willing to talk to the people at Anglers too if you would like. Don't know them but know the Sandy people pretty well. Maybe Jason B could talk to them too if you are interested.

Maybe it could be a day or an afternoon fishing and then meeting to eat pizza and tie flies that evening since evening fishing is a little more difficult in the winter.

I would like to come--if my schedule permits. Make the call then I will see what is on my plate.

Then next time I'm in Orem, I can see about talking to the AI guys. I live in Cedar Hills so Orem might be more central to everyone. Regardless of where, let's tentatively plan for next Wednesday. What time works? 6:30?

I'd suggest this session be dedicated to midges. Any other suggestions?

Curtis,

7pm would be better for me, but if it is at 6:30 I would just be a little late.

Thanks,
Dustin

6:30 or 7:00 works for me. I was going to suggest waiting until after the holidays but if there is enough interest before let's do it. Where is a good place to meet. I am in Genola so any where is fine by me. Provo or Orem sounds like the best. Spanish fork isn't that far to drive unless you live in Lehi or AF.

Midges sound great. I have never learned to tie many midges and it sounds like they are pretty effective during the winter.

It might be better to wait until after the holidays, then more people could attend.

I realize it is a ways off but that gives us time to round up some support for it and plan for it. It gives us time to find a location as well.

I haven't heard back from Pathaws but he may want to join in and meet at his cabin. After the Holidays works for me. I do work Tue-Sat nights though

The 8th won't work for me - be out of town. But don't hold it up for me if it works for most everyone else.

Anyone opposed to a Monday night? That way Jason B could make it. I realize it is family night and all but I think it would be worth it.

On a side note, I called Sportsman's Warehouse and Angler's Inn to see if we could use their facilities for our meeting. I am waiting to hear back from both. That would give us a place to tie and we would have access to the materials we need.

Jason B

Talked to Pathaws and he said he could do it any day but Sun or Thur. Mondays are best for me. Im the minority here though so whatever works best for everyone. Just have to settle on a date.

Mondays are good for me. What about Monday the 6th of January. After the holidays and plenty of time to roung up a group. Is 7:00 all right with everyone?

Next item: where to meet. I like the Spanish Fork arrangement.

Trouty
12-14-2002, 01:21 AM
should work for me too if thats what everyone decides.

Curtis Fry
12-14-2002, 03:50 PM
The 6th is fine, but let's shoot for somewhere more central than SF. I'll be heading up to Angler's in Orem today and will talk to them. I know a couple of the guys there, so we might be able to do that.

I can't see that they'd say no.

Tightlinez
12-14-2002, 06:25 PM
But wouldnt it be funner to do it somewhere where we can order pizza, watch monday night football while we tie, etc.? But maybe thats just me. If Im the only one who wants the social aspect too, that ok, i'll do it wherever.

nhancock
12-17-2002, 06:03 PM
We can order Pizza there. I don't think the guys there would mind. I don't know them real well. I doubt they would have a problem with someone bringing a TV.

*I just checked the MNF schedule and there are no games on the 6th. The last Monday night game this season is on the 30th.

12-17-2002, 07:53 PM
That answers all my concerns. Whatever everyone else decides will be fine.

That gives us almost 3 weeks to pimp the meeting. Can I say pimp on this site? We need a good turn out to get some momentum and get these meetings on a regular basis. The more the better.

We still need a place to meet. It sounds like somewhere in the Provo/Orem area will be best.

Trouty
12-20-2002, 11:10 PM
they are closing their Sandy and Orem stores by the end of the year at the lastest so they are definitely not an option anymore.

They are having 50% of everything in the store. Some people sure got a steal on some pontoons, rods, reels and line. I was just in the Sandy store and it has been pretty well cleaned out, did get a nice little Reddington large arbor for my kid for $60 though.

There are still some fly-tying materials in there but they will go fast too I'm sure. They still had a few hundred packs of TMC 900's when I was in there.

nhancock
12-20-2002, 11:23 PM
Then we need to establish a location. Is there anywhere in the Provo/Orem area where we could meet? Someone's house?

What if we did it at a resteraunt? Like a Pizza Hut or something? They might let us use a back room or something?

Trouty
01-01-2003, 10:14 PM
So..... are we on for the 6th or is it cancelled? I'm okay with the Spanish Fork location if there isn't anyplace closer. Lets decide one way or the other.

What is everyone's feeling?

Curtis Fry
01-02-2003, 12:17 AM
Spanish Fork is, I assume, a little too non-central to most people. The Provo/Orem area would be ideal. If no one has any room (Pathaws cabin?), I'd say we could possibly meet at either BYU or UVSC in some type of common public area that has tables. We used to go BYU at the Wilkenson center for that type of thing in the past and no one seemed to care much. Plus there's food nearby.

So if the cabin is a no-go, then I vote for BYU.

I know Cedar Hills is not much closer than SF for some, but I have enough room in my fly tying area to fit 10 guys or so, if that would work better than a big public area.

01-02-2003, 12:51 PM
I would love to make the cabin available, but currently there is a little heat issue, or I should say the no heat issue. The first meeting we had there was last spring and it was a little chilly, I'm afraid it would just be too cold to be at all comfortable during this winter. I'm open to about any location, Cedar Hills would be great, or BYU.

I like hte BYU idea. It is more central and I think more people might show up. Is there a theme or a fly someone wants to learn. I'm not going to bring all my stuff but I will bring whatever is needed. I can bring a TV/VCR with some videos or some fishing trips of fly tying sutff I have done.

For the furture meetings, I will see of our Provo office is available for use. I think it should be since the office is not used in the afternoons.

Curtis Fry
01-02-2003, 04:41 PM
Ok, let's go with BYU then. I think midges would be a good theme. We'll tie up some larva (yong maybe) and an emerger or two. Just bring some small hooks.

Where to meet then? I haven't been to BYU in about 6 years and I understand they remodeled a bunch of stuff. Is there a place in the Wilk, anyone knows specifically?

for use if we are interested. It is the Nature's Sunshine Building just east of the Steven Henagar building in Provo. We have a choice between a nice executive board room or a training room, both of which have heat. I have not scheduled the rooms yet, but they are available for future use. The are a couple small stipulation that we would need to abide by if we wanted to use them. First, I would need to be at the meeting or someone else who is employed with Nature's Sunshine has to be present and with the group. I plan on atttending most meeting as long as I can bring my little girl, Saige, who is almost three years old with me.

The other stipulation is that we we clean up after ourselves and that everyone checks in at the front desk. The loactions is right off the I-15 exit so it is easy to find. If that works best I will schedule all the available rooms and we can choose one of them for the night. Since the meeting is after our regular business hours, all the rooms are most likely going to be available. Let me know what you all think.

Unfortunately it may be too late to hit our January 6th target date. Is this a room we can use on a regular basis? Any suggestions for a date and time?

Curtis Fry
01-03-2003, 03:41 PM
Without making this any more complicated than it already is, let's do the BYU thing Monday evening unless we get the Nature's sunshine room then.

fishn, let us know if it's available. If it's not, then let's say 7pm at the Wilkensen center?

I have reserved both board rooms, if that is where everyone wants to meet, at the Natures Sunshine building in East bay. The rooms are reserved for the 6th of January from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM. The rooms are in the West building and you will need to enter from the main entrance on the East side of the building. I will try to be there a few minutes early. It sounds like the theme will be midges.

How many people are planning on coming?

I will be there. If I remember right, in the past the Utah County chapter has never charged dues. Instead they have braught their own materials. Is this still the case? Maybe Jason B or Pathaws could shed some light on this. If so what materials do we need to bring. I have never tied midges so this will be great.

Also you may want to bring a few dollars in case we decide to order pizza.

Jason B
01-04-2003, 04:08 AM
we have never had any "dues". As for what materials you may need is hard to say. The midge patterns that i was going to be tying are very simple but very effective for winter nymphing. Bring any midge material you may use. In the past we have just hung out and shared patterns, really no set agenda for the night. I have some extra hooks and materials if you don't have it. Should be a blast.

We can talk about any needed dues on Monday. I should have enough materials if someone doesn't have any. If anything, bring some TMC 2487's in size #24 for the midge pupae. Also bring some black small size thread. I use 14/O, but anything up to 8/O should work fine. If we're doing midges, don't forget your Coats and Clark.

Just wondering - will you have a vacuum cleaner, some trash cans, etc. there for us to clean up with? or do we need to bring our own?

What time will you be there (in case we arrive early)? I'd probably come early and just start tying since there are a lot of flies I need to get tied up.

Is there a cell number or something we can call if we get lost (I know you said its easy but I'd rather sound foolish than drive a half hour and then turn around and drive back because I couldn't seem to find it.)

Do the tables there allow us to attach our vises or are they too thick so we need to bring our pedestal vice?

I would interested in a Utah County Tie Fest.

I'm not sure if I have a key or will have a key for the vacuum closet. If someone has an easily portable vacuum they could bring, that would be greatly appreciated. I will bring some extra garbage bags and some glass cleaner for the tables.

If we order food, I would prefer that we eat it in the lunch room. As a matter of fact, the lunch room might be the best place to tie flies also. From the lunch room we can watch the entrance for late comers, and it has plenty of tables for tying, not to mention a few vending machines.

For your vises, pedestals would be the best. I'm not sure how thick the tables are and there is not much I will be able to do if they are too thick.

I do not have a cell phone but I do have a pager, the number is 351-4255. Page me if you are lost or if you have any questions. The address for the building is 75 East 1700 South. We are in the WEST building.

Well for all those who dogged us last night, we had a great time. Next time, we hope some more people show up. There are some great patterns to be shared. If nothing else, it was great chewing the cud and talking about our fishing escapades. fishn, those were some great pics. Well, all fifteen tables that we had set up filled up really fast. The next time we will need to reserve at least three rooms for the Utah County meeting if we have the same amount of people show up. It went so well we decided to tie for almost the whole night (five hours) non-stop. We each tied a couple dozen flies, swapped them, ordered pizza, and watch a couple short fly fishing vidoes. I great time was had by all.

Okay, okay, we only had three tiers show up. Curtis, Jason B., and myself. We did not tie any flies, or order pizza. All we did was talk fishing and Curtis showed us a couple patterns. I had a good time talking with the guys that showed up. Next time we will hold the meeting in a location that might interest some more tiers to come or at a better time. No worries Trouty and nhancock, our next meeting will hopefully go a lot better, I think.

Should we schedule another meeting now so people can schedule it in? Sorry to hear only three people showed up. I think that location is probably as good as any unless someone else has a better location.
