I've been reading here about the tying club meetings (even though I can't attend, since their all on weekday nights when I'm at work), and I was wondering what you all use for tying light. Are there many options? Any of them good? And how about dual power sources, plug in or batteries. How much do they cost, and are they too bulky to pack up or work with easily?

I use a flourescent desk lamp I got at Wal-mart for about $20. I am going to try and put a "natural" light bulb in it in order to be able to see the correct colors. It uses both a pedestal base and also has a clamp. It also has a very long arm.
Hope this helps

I use pretty much the same thing. What I was thinking of is something smaller, for a portable tying kit. Something I could use on a tailgate or in camp too.

Many stores like shopko, K-mart etc. have these little bendable worm lights for reading. They run on batteries, they're small, and cheap. You can get a decent one for like ten bucks.

I have not yet begun to tie (two weeks and counting) so I am really talking out of my...other end, but maybe one of those headlamps would work. I hear the LED ones are pretty bright, and being battery powered would help when camping.
Some people might give an odd glance when they see you using a headlamp during the day, but if you follow the advice in other threads you will also be wearing knee pads and have women's nylons on your hands. Maybe that will distract from the headlamp.

It's funny that you mention the headlamp. I have had one for a while. Some of the best fishing is at dusk and I have a hard time seeing to tie a fly on my line. The bulb in my desk lamp went out and I didn't have a replacement. I used my headlamp for what I thaught was going to be temporary. Now I am sold. The light is exactly where I need it and if its not it is easily adjusted. The light is bright and shadows are greatly reduced. Try it.

Mckenzie sells a portable tying light. It is small, with a bendable neck. Also comes with both AC and DC attatchments. I think it sells for 40-50 dollars. Nice looking light.......

I tried two links but they both come out the same, if you use the link at the bottom of the page on the website it will say back to vises. It will show you the other light.

I thought about the flex lights, but wasn't sure if they'd be bright enough. Are there any with LED lighting? Hadn't thought about a headlamp, good idea for camping. Thanks Carp & T4X, those are what I had in my head. I'll check out the other stuff, but does anyone sell those two around here? I'd really rather buy local than online or via catalog.

When I was at SW in Riverdale they had one on demo but were sold out.

The color rendition of white LED lights is abysmal. However, if you're tying with familiar materials and not trying to match some bug you found on the river you should be ok.
