I own a St Croix Ultra Legend 6w, an Orvis Silver Label 6w, a Loomis GL3 5w and a Loomis GL4 4w 9'. The GL4 is my favorite rod out of the bunch. I have heard alot of praise from several of the posters about the Orvis rods but I think it is mostly employer loyalty. Not to say the Orvis rods are inferior, just that I prefer my GL4. To be honest, I wish I would have spent the extra money and purchased a GLX instead of my Orvis. Just my personal preference.

I would bet that if you took a GLX out for one day, you would fall in love. But eveyone has there own personel preferences. The GLX has very fast action and plenty of muscle i love mine.

Try a 7' 3wt for the 24+ microflies.

I owned a G Loomis GL4 about 5 years ago. Someone decided they wanted it more than I did and took it out of the back of my truck. I thaught it was a great rod. My parents home owners insurance covered the rod and I was able to replace it.

When I went to the flyshop (Great Basin - now out of business) the guy talked me into a Thomas and Thomas. The rod was cheaper but in my opinion in no way inferior. I was able to purchase a better reel with the remainder of the money. I love the T&T every bit as much as the G Loomis. And it was about half the price.

My point is, I have never been a big proponant of big name brands. At some point you begin paying for a name on the side of the rod as opposed to better technology and quality. Scientific Angler is a great example. They offer quality products at a price significantly less than other brands.

I use the GL3 with clients that i am guiding. It is a faster rod and is great for the price.

I have a 9ft 5 wt. GL3 and absolutely love it. It is a faster action rod, great for all the fishing I do. I also have a 7 1/2 ft 3wt Temple Fork Rod. I like it a lot too. For my Alaska fishing (which I have never done, but plan to) I have a 9 ft 8wt Orvis Silver Label. I have a hell of a time casting that. Most people I have talked to say that it is easier to cast a heavier rod further, maybe I am a freak, but I can cast my GL3 further. I back up the GL3 to the death....great rod.

I have Scott, Sage, Orvis, G. Loomis and St. Croix rods and I have to say that I agree, G. Loomis make some damn fine sticks. I like G. Loomis because when they say their rod is a 9 foot for a 5 weight, then that is exactly what it is. They are fast, powerful rods without sacrificing sensitivity. Orivs used to make some damn fine rods, one in particular was the Spring Creek 9 foot 3 inch for a 5 that was sweeeeeet!, but I'm not to impressed with the ones they are making today.

Haven't had a chance to try the GLX yet, but the GL3 is a damn fine rod. Hands down.

I have a question regarding this Rod my father purchased in 92 but never used because of his long illness and recent passing. I have listed this Rod on ebay under my ebay ID of georgiabellelab1. My question is simply what is it worth. I cannot find any reference too it and if I understand it has not been manufactured for a while. Is this true? Feel free to look. It is a two peice rod which I am sure you all know. We dont fly fish down here in alabama much so that tells you what I know about the sport. But we do love to Bass fish for lunkers and if I could find a rod like this for bass fishing it would definitely be an experience. Thanks for any input you fine folks to send my way.

Have you thrown an Orvis Zero Gravity or T3? I have a 9ft 5wt GL3 and I absolutely love it. GREAT ROD. But, when my buddy with the T3 offers to let me use it for a day, I always take him up on it.

The point is a Silver Label may be a good rod, but isn't the best Orvis has to offer.
