View Full Version : Bass Fly Swap

Now that many of us will begin tying for next year, I would like to propose a Bass fly swap. I know that the season is far away, but because sometimes they take more time to tie than a nymph, it might be good to start one now. I'm thinking of having about 10 people involved. Will I be able to "lure" around 10 of you to participate?

How much time are you proposing on having this swap going? I'd like to join, but like you say bass flies take longer and time is something I'm a little short on these days. Let me know what you plan on and I'll let you know if I'll join in.

This could be a very interesting swap with how wild the patterns for bass can be.

I have a pattern that worked real well this year at Mantua.

I think we would be able to get flies submitted by Dec 20th or so. That gives plenty o' time to tie them up. So we're up to 2. HURRY!!! there are only 8 spots left!

Bscort- Mantua pattern (name?)
Cheech- Cheechenstein

Only 8 spots left! OS! I better hurry. lol.

Cheech, I would, but I have only caught two bass on a fly rod in my life, and I think it was pure luck.

You are missing out. Even though Utah bass tend to be smallish, they can be a lot of fun on a 3 wt. There are places in Utah that will require a 7wt. and a depends undergarment to have a fun day. Warmwater is a blast.

You'll have to show me sometime next spring, cheech.

Fred- Sounds like fun. Mantua can be a blast with a small rod

I am going to push the date back to the 1st week of Jan. For those of you that are hesitant to enter, Bass will appreciate some of your best stillwater trout patterns. Let's see em'.

Sounds awesome. I will probably tie a perch clouser, great on Jordanelle.

I'm in. I'll be tying an Olive Carey Bugger, my style.

I'll make MWSpearo join. That will be 6. We need 4 more. I might just have to throw in an Olive Willey bonus fly.

The name of my fly is the "Bloop".

There is a fairly simple pattern by LaFontaine's team I've been wanting to tie up called the Drunken Sailor. Al Beatty says its been really good for him for BlueGill, Carp, Bass and Trout. I've never fished it. If you don't have enough people and don't mind someone sending in a pattern they can't personally vouch for, I could join. Let me know.

Cool! This is going to be fun because Bass flies can tend to get creative. 3 more spots.

Crosby, don't you have a killer crawfish pattern that we all won't be able to live without?

I may be getting myself in trouble here, but I'm going to plan on tying up some Balsa Gerbubble Bugs. That is if they don't end up taking me forever. I just bought some new balsa and will try to get the bodies done over Thanksgiving. We'll see if my wife doesn't kill me since I'll be spending all my time tying these bugs :)

I'm excited to see all of the patterns that come out of this swap.

By the way -- The first part of January sounds good as a due date

Teewinot

Well, I did get all of the balsa wood bodies carved out and ready to be primed and painted. Looks like I'll be able to get these done sooner than I thought.

I may be changing to some Dahlberg's Divers, but we'll see.
If everyone could email me at cheinfeliz@hotmail.com, I will give you mailing instructions. We could also arrange for drop offs.

I don't know Cheech - a fly with a name like Cheechenstein's gotta be good! Was really looking forward to seeing that one :>)

Whatever you want man - its your swap!

I just might bring out the commercial tyer in me and do the Cheechenstein, and the Diver. It just depends on if you guys are naughty or nice.

I have replied to Trouty, Bcsort, Teewinot, MWSpearo, and Jason. Fish a Fly, I need to get you my info. When you send flies, be sure to send them in a container that is a little bit bigger. At SW they sell small plastic boxes for no more than $2. I don't think an Altoids can will work this time. I am going to do both the Cheechenstein, and the Dahlberg's Diver.

Those fish in Pelican are going to hate us next year.

Cheech -- so how many flies are we each tying then?

cheech

you need to at least tie 7. If you want one for yourself, tie 8

I got the official name of this fly from my buddy the other day.

The pattern is called a "gergeler". I added some legs so I think I feel OK calling it the "Mantua Gergeler".

"Bloop," is the noise this fly makes. Bloop.. Bloop.. Bloop. etc.

How are we all doing with our bugs? The deadline is 3 weeks away. Tie 2.3 flies per week and you should be good to go. I've got some divers and cheechensteins ready to go!

The deadline is Jan 3, 2003. I got Jason's Jim Carey buggers today. They look pretty sweet. He even did them on Tiemcos. And don't forget to send me enough postage to re-send all of your stuff. One last reminder, you will probably have to send them in a bigger box than normal. Bass flies are big.

to bass fish. I have received flies from:
Jason
Bcsort
Fish a Fly

I have full confidence that Trouty and Teewinot will have theirs in soon. I know where MWSpearo's box o' willies is, so if he doesn't give me bugs, I'll just steal em'. This is going to be the swap of all swaps!

LOL.... they'll be there but it will be close to the end date before I can send them out. Sorry - getting sick really threw me back. I'm also going to send you another fly which I've never tried on bass but I think might work and I thought you might be willing to try it sometime when you've got nothing to lose. :) It even has spun hair so you might love it!?

7 flies right??

cheech
12-27-2002, 09:20 PM
7 flies is correct. I guess you could call it a tactful reminder. My wife likes it when people give me spun hair flies because they don't make a mess in her house!

Everyone should be sending their flies off today. I have received Jason's, Fish a fly's , and Bcsort's flies. I will get MWSpearo's tomorrow, so lets get swapped!!

Thanks,

Are you also having us e-mail tying/fishing instructions to you so you can compile it and e-mail it to everyone?

It is sure nice to have if you are able to.

cheech

I would actually prefer you to include a little sheet of info attached to each fly. Email would work too.

We have some sweet flies. I am going to try to get some pics to put on the site. Maybe Jason can help out with that. I will be sending flies out later this week.

I got the swap flies tonight and they look sweet. I'll try and get some photos of the flies soon and add them to the fly archive.

I just got my flies in the mail. There are some really neat patterns that some of you tied!! I can't wait to go use them this summer. Although the way this winter is I'd probably be able to take my boat on Mantua before too long. Does anyone know if it's even iced over at all?

Thanks Cheech for hosting this swap, it was great!! I'd have to say that you are the bass fly master. Thanks!!

I like the weed guards you put on your fly, I was planning on doing it to the gerbubble bugs I tied, but I just ran out of time. If you want to do it though it's pretty simple. I did mine with a double mono-guard like yours, but what you do is drill two small holes in the balsa on the bottom up by the eye (one on either side of the center line). Then glue in the mono and measure it back to the bend of the hook and tie it off. It's pretty simple and fishes much better on Mantua with the weed guards.

I'm experimenting with the balsa now. Last night I busted some out and am looking forward to the next bass swap. Hint Hint!

MWSpearo -- If you need any tips let me know. That balsa is fun stuff for building flies.

MWS and I tried out some bugs this weekend. Teewinot, your balsa bug works! MWS was also having excellent luck with balsa divers and poppers. I tried others from this swap, but I guess I'm partial to the Cheechenstein. It did a lot of work for me this week. These bugs made the drive out of state worth it!

Cheech -- I'm glad it worked for you. You'll have to e-mail me a full report.

Trouty
01-28-2003, 01:51 AM
CC me on that report you send to Tee. (If you get around to sending it.) I'm really interested in hitting some more bass this year. I can promise, though, that I won't be doing enough bass fishing to have any possibility of ruining any waters.
