I am going to combine geocaching with a flyswap. I realize this limits those of you who will participate, but it will be fun. I am going to place some flies ( a dozen or so) in a location and post the GPS coordinates, probably near a popular fishing area. The idea is to use your GPS to locate the cache, take a few flies, leave a few flies, and log your visit to the cache site. I will post details here and at geocaching.com, I would like to gauge if there would be any interest in this kind of a thing here, I am sure other geocachers will visit it just for fun, but I think it would be a cool way to swap flies and an excuse to get out.

Oh great, now I have to add a GPS device to my Christmas list. "But Honey, I need it for fishing, honest I do."

pathaws -- I checked out the website -- it looks interesting. Is it really that hard though to find these things when you are given the exact coordinates? It seems like once I punch coordinates into my GPS it just points the way I should walk and tells me how far away I am.
I'm curious to find out more about this.
Have you actually done any of these?
If you end up stashing one up in the Cache Valley area I'd be willing to join in and go drop off a few flies in exchange for a few in the cache.

I think this is a great idea.
I did a lot of geocaching last year when I lived in Denver but I haven't had the desire to do any around here. I found that most of the caches I visited contained stupid childrens toys and little else that kept me interested in hiking down more of them. A geocache with flies? Oh Ill hit that one for sure.
As far as it being easy. Some of them are extremely easy and some of them are extremely difficult. Most GPS are only accurate to around 20 feet on a good day in a good area, you get in a canyon or aound some trees and that accuracy goes down considerably. And on top of that they will usually hide the container under some rocks, tree stumps, bushes and once I searched for nearly an hour before I looked up to find one in a tree. As a matter of fact I remember hearing of a cache near Boulder Colorado that you had to first hike to then, rappell down to find it shoved in a crack. It was started with 3 $100 bills.
It is an interesting "sport" if you can call it that. Check it out if you have never heard of it. Geocaching.com

I agree that it wouldn't be too exciting to go searching for a cache of teddy bears or something, but I'd go for the flies (or if someone wants to stuff it with $100 bills I wouldn't mind that either)
If someone wants to get one going I'd go for it. I've never done one so I don't think I'm the best one to initiate anything.
let me know if anything gets started.

Did you say you would post information or is it already posted and I just didn't see it on the website? I looked and could not see anything related to flies. If I can't even locate the directions I will never be able to find the cache. (LOL)

I'm glad you brought this thread up, it sounds like something I would like to try. I've been using my GPS for about 3 years fishing and I think it would be kind of fun to do a fly swap this way.

I thought it could be fun as well. Just have to wait and see.

Did this cache ever happen? I have been thinking of doing my own and I thought I would search and sure enoug, you guys have already talked about it.
A quick search didn't show any results of a flyfishing cache in Utah. If there is still some interest then I will get one going.
Thanks,
Bryon

I believe Lonnie is working on coming up with something when the weather gets better.
No reason we can't have two though.

I'm working on it now. Still trying to decide if I want to keep it close to where I work. (near the international center) so that I can keep an eye on it and add contents to keep peoples interest or some place in the mountains by a watering hole like someone had suggested. Most likely do 2 of them, I will be able to get the close one done quicker. I will update you when I have posted it to geocaching.com sometime after this weekend most likely.
Thanks
PS: What do I need to do and whose approval to add the utahonthefly logo and web address to my little letter and geocache description? I would like to mention the group and spread the word of this great site. If that is not suggested then I will not list them in there.

Yeah I've got some ideas. I know where, but I'm still waiting on the big blow out. I've got a bunch of flies from the swaps I've been in that I'm going to use the "seed" the start of the swap.

Can you disclose why you need to lock it up?

The spot is going to be fairly accessible. Therefore there is a good chance the average joe could walk by and find it. I would hate for somebody to find the cache and make off the flies. I'll post the combination to the lock with the coordinates. That way only the people that are in the know get the goods....

Glad that you appreciate the site. We'd be happy to have you add the site URL and logo to your geocache letter. I'm interested in seeing how this particular swap plays out!
