Just want to say how impressed I am with the Tippet Midge. Looks more realistic than the yong special in my opinion and the fish have really agreed. An iron grey tippet midge size 22 is now my #1 fly. Add a mecury bead for a killer emerger pattern. If you add a tail and a shell back, you have a great bwo nymph.

Sounds like a good pattern. Could you email me some instructions on how to tie it.

I believe I've seen it here in the fly tying section....a pic and all.

Do you worry about the reverse taper you get from tying in the mono?

If you build the thread toward the head after you tie in the mono, there really isn't a problem with reverse taper. Unlike the picture on this site, I tie the tippet midge short and thick like a yong special.

Thanks. I was tying in the mono last.

I'm glad some of you have enjoyed the Tippet Midge. I actually came up with this fly about three years ago one night trying to figure out how I could get a more realistic translucent midge body instead of v-rib and saw a piece of tippet that happen to be on my desk. Walla, the Tippet Midge. What's nice is all you need are different colored threads and you can create an endless selection of patterns. Here's a tip for you. Try using different tippet diameters for your flies. Go smaller and go bigger. I think I usually use a 5x tippet. I've done well with this fly but I've strayed away from it including the v-rib midge. I just like to experiment with new patterns every year so I tend to forget about the ol' stand bys that I've done well with in the past. I've tied the tippet midge with a beadhead and peacock collar as well. I have not tried a tippet midge emerger though. Could be deadly.
