I just tried this technique and it seems to work pretty well. You can use big feathers to wing small flies this way, and you can shorten one or both wings after you have tied them in so your wings will always be the same length:

Flyty- you can also use that wing as a post for a parachute.

I tried that technique with some hen saddle feathers for some bigger wings(#16), but I wasn't able to split the stem to separate the wings. I can only get it to work with hen neck feathers and then only with the tips of the feathers: near the butt of the neck feather the stem won't split either, which is limiting me to size 18 and smaller wings, and that's after soaking the feathers in water overnight.
