I hope this is the right place to put this, but anyway.... I started tying most of my nymphs with thin skin for the wing case. I like it because it stretches a little bit, and it's very forgiving. I also tie scuds with it. They look amazing. My latest adventure was to create a crawdad pattern. It made an awesome body and tail.

Great for wing-cases! Much easier to tie in than Turkey feather. I like the look better too.

Thin Skin? I have never heard of it, though I am not an expert tyer either. Is it just a plastic type material?

Comes in a sheet, and has a plastic rubbery type texture to it. Comes in different color combos. Just trim off what you need and tie in like you would pheasant tail fibers or turkey tail fibers. It's not as thick as turkey feathers, and stretches nicely like Cheech is pointing out. The end result after stretching accross your dubbing and tying in is allot cleaner looking and no seperations between fibers. Sweet!

Thinskin is a nice product but I prefer Bugskin. It is real leather with the suede backing removed so it is very thin, stretchy and it absorbs water giving it an extremely realistic look and feel. Try some. It is great for wing casings, minnow sillouettes, crawfish and other patterns. It also comes in about 40 colors!

How did your crawdad pattern turn out? I have been searching for a new crawdad pattern to try on the smallies at Jordanelle and from what I gather from looking through past posts you are quite experienced in this. Would you mind sharing your pattern or posting a pic? Thanks

I've seen the stuff in some fly tying tutorials, but I was wondering where you can purchase the stuff? I would like to give it a try.

I used some for the under wing on a bullet head hopper pattern over the weekend. I was afraid it would inhibit the floating capabilities, but with a nice thick deer hair bullett head & wing, the thing floats like a cork & the fish liked it as well. Very translucent, shiny & durable, keeps its form well. It held up well after numerous cutthroat attacks.
I believe I purchased it at SW & I believe they have a good selection of it.

Sportsman's Warehouse has it in many colors. I like the one that resembles turkey tail feathers. Bought some Saturday from "Low-Country" at the Riverdale store. He can hook you up.
