What hook(s) would you recommend for nymphs: the TMC 200R, TMC 3761, or TMC 3769?

It depends on what type of nymph you are tying. Are you looking at straight shanks or curved shank hooks.

...just a standard nymph hook. When would you use a curved hook, and when would you use a straight shank hook?

I ty a lot of my nymphs on curved shank hooks. When the natural floats downstream, they are usually doubled over or bent. Gay Lafontaine desribed this as a triggering characteristic. Mostly I ty midge pupue and scuds on curved shank, but I have actually had better success with a curved shank PT than with a straight. I do use the TMC 3761 because of the 1x long shank. it makes the fly look slimmer and more natural than the shorter nymph hooks do.

I like the TMC 100 and 101 for small midge nymphs and RS2s. That's what Kim uses on the yong's I think. I like the 200R too. 2487 and 2312 are good curved hooks too.

I tie most of my flys on a 200R. I think that it is a great hook for nymphs. A size 18 with a 3X long shank works great for sows.

I'm like Fanatic just can't remember those hook numbers- hell I have to look at the back of my underwear to remember what size I wear- I guess thats better than thinking the 32 is for my IQ.
Jason B- I do think I know the 200R- I think the nymph looks great on them- just not sold on the hooking quality- bent shank- small gap- kinda like when tying a stimulatir on them- great look- more hook to work with but the hooking quality leaves a bit more to be desired. But just my opinion- give me as much gap as I can get.

The 2457 is the strongest & I can get a bead on the smaller sizes, unlike the 200, tho that's a great hook for a lot of flies. The natural curve on the 2457 is great for midges & caddis nymphs, the 3769 is the sturdiest straight shanked one for mayflies that I've found. We run into a lot of big fish over here (Sierras) & I for one can't stand to have a hook fail! ;)
PS Try the 2499 sometime, it's a circlehook type.
