I know some of you have been having success at Jordanelle lately and have been catching some nice-sized bass. The last time I was up there I hooked into a couple of decent sized rainbows, but all I could catch besides that was a few perch. My best luck was with a black crystal wooly bugger and a fast sinking line. I fished a clear camo for a long time and didn't get much at all.

So, I was wondering, what types of flies have been effective for the larger bass? What type of set-up? And, what type of retrieve? And, how many did you catch?

Thanks for any help.

I haven't been there but I have always felt those Wiggle Bugs that Tullis ties would be the ticket for bass. Good movement and big enough to get some attention. Just a guess.

the people you need to talk to is bcsort and cheech, they seem to have that place figured out. Weeks ago cheech caught a very healthy smallmouth. I have seen some of cheech's flies and they look very nice.

Paid the nine bucks to fish Rockcliff area Sunday of the Labor Day weekend. Caught 3 smallies there on white woolies. Some kids told me the North end is better for smallies. Interested in cheech and and bscorts' info too!

There's a new photo in the photo album of Cheech with a big bass. Not sure where he caught it but it looks like it was a monster. Cheech is the bass man. You could probably email him direct if his email is available.

I'd try crawdads, clousers, playboy bunnies, bright colored crystal buggers, and maybe foam poppers if there's any surface action.

If you want to get into fish, Don't fish on Saturday. Jordanelle is way too crowded for that. Look for a time when it is less crowded. One important thing with Smallies is that they eat the exact same thing as trout. I try all different kinds of retrieves when I'm there. The most successful method is using a type 3 sink line, and troll with it. Once you start to feel nudges, start to strip the fly in slowly. I have been using a fly called the Olive Willey. It is a stillwater pattern that I got from Seattle. They will be in the Orvis shop soon:) I usually go out with MWspearo, and we catch a fair number of Trout and Bass on The Olive Willey. We haven't really had to use much else.

So you've been using your willy, huh? Is that legal? Just kidding.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm going to have to try it again and get more serious about these smallies. I caught a few last year, but not very big ones. I hate the $9.00 charge though.

Cheech is right about the willey. It is pretty much all we've been using and catch bass and trout. Last week we were even having luck with carp at D.C. You need to get it deep. Work the edges as well as the structure. If you are getting snagged, you in the right area.

So, what does this olive willey look like? How do you tie it?

I don't have any pics of it. It is kind of hard to explain. It has pheasant philoplume, pheasant rump, olive chenille, red rabbit hair, and a red bead. put it all into a blender and there you have it. I'll try to get some pics.

No fishing for me this weekend, unfortunately. Wife works on Sunday and I have the kids.

I am going out tomorrow. I'm giing to go chase some big cutts.... I don't fish on Sundays, but I think it would be fun to get out some time. I've got a baby coming any day right now, so that limits my fishing time a little bit. Let me know how oyu guys do.

O.K.- I think were gonna go try it, across by the rocks for sure. That's where I've had most of my luck anyway. Good luck on the new baby cheech. We'll say a silent one for you. First One?
