Getting ready to hit the Green this fall and tying up some patterns for the trip. I got to thinking about what to tie and was wondering what some of your favorites are?
My go to pattern is a variation on a WD40. I tie them in various colors, tan grey & olive. I use natural rabbit dubbing and a small piece of maribou for the thorax/wing case and a little crystal flash for the tail. In the spring and fall this pattern works for me when all else fails. I fish it deep as part of a 2 fly rig in the pocket water, as well as in the film with floatant. My favorite dry is sparkle dun with a crystal flash tail. I tie them just as small as I can and lean more towards the tan and grey shades as opposed to olive to match the naturals (they seem to be more tan than olive to me ). I dont expect you guys to give away all of your secrets but if you wouldnt mind sharing - what are some of your go to patterns? Thanks, Boomer

Boomer, sounds like you've got it covered. So, tie a few extra for me, will ya?

I don't fish the Green much, so I don't have any favorite patterns, sorry. I am curious at how deep you do fish the flies?

on the bottom - how ever deep that might be.

I think that the later you get into the fall, small flies like a zebra midge or an RS2 become more important. But I would never go to the Green without Gray and Olive RS2s. Big browns love those for some reason.

Thanks for making me sound like an idiot.

I know the bottom, how deep are some of those holes?

(Wow, now I really sound like an idiot, that statement sounds kind of funny. I prefer ladies!!!)

With the water at 800 cfs I would guess that the deeper holes are around 6 feet or so.

I go to-Wooly buggers! Black with a tail about one and a half the legnth of the hook shank, and those peach/pink ones with white hackle and white bushy tail. The pink ones are sold at the lodge fly shop, and in Dutch John and produce BIG rainbows and browns when stripped from the bank with an intermediate sink line. Not very durable though.

Also BWO Barr's emergers dropped off a Baetis Thorax. SMALL. 20-24. San Juans, pink or red......Quill Midges 18-22..fuzzballs..the list goes on......

Aaah, forget the small stuff, go big or go home. Try some big gray or olive zonkers and various streamers. The big browns love those things.

But, if there's a good baetis hatch a few CDC BWO emergers size 18 should work great for the risers. You can't beat Fred's suggestions as well.

I fish the river below Fontenelle a bunch. My favorite fly, especially in the winter and early spring, is Gary LaFontaine's Twist Nymph. Paul Stinson turned me on to it a couple of years ago. Its became one of my most reliable patterns. Paul also ties an "Enchanted Prince". He claims it outfishes a normal Prince Nympgh two to one. Guess I need to sit down and make some up and give it a try.
