I bought a Elkhorn traveler series rod 7 piece. Great casting rod, but it has broke twice on me. Elkhorn has replaced the rod twice and sent me a new rod. I just got the rod back and went out with a class of people to teach casting and landing fish and broke out the new rod. You got it, on the first fish to land, the tip broke about 3 " from the top ferral. Almost the exact same place the others broke. I am waiting to hear from Elkhorn to see what they are going to do? This last one is only a 4 piece rod, but it appears to have the same problem as the 7 piece! I have a 4 weight and 3 weight 2 piece that fish real well and haven't had a days problem with them. So it just might be the travel series rod that has the problems?

I think I would give up on these guys, get your money back, and buy a real rod- sage. Thats pretty pathetic to have three rods break.

First one broke on a fish. Second one broke just casting, and the third broke again on a fish. Just landing them. Right hand on pole, left on net, bringing the fish to net and snap! This year has been the pits for poles......

Sorry to hear about your rod, again. Wow, this has been a banner year of bad luck for you, hasn't it? If your other non-travel rods are still good, then I would exchange the 5 wt. travel for a two pc. Other than that, I'd get my money back and get another brand.

Just heard from the Elkhorn rep today, and he appologized repeatedly. He said he would get me a new rod tip sent out today, and if I had any problems with it this time, he would refund my money. I also would like to just pass on the travel series and just get the two piece. He stated that the 5 piece he sent me has a good track record, and that I was just having a run of bad luck. I don't think they will want to put me on there testing crew?

Well, it doesn't sound like you need to rush out and buy one of those real fly rods. I don't think that I could convince John Stosel to do a show on fly rods but I think if he looked into the Sage series rods and the price tag that goes along with it he would say "Give me a break." A friend of mine let me borrow one of his rods for the last month (Sage SLT 9' #4). I'm very unimpressed, I can't believe they find people to pay that ridiculous price. A different friend also had to send back two of his rods for repair to Sage.

I don't feel I have to justify to anyone but my wife my 3 Sage rods or my GLX or have to defend why I didn't pay a "premium" price for a St. Croix. I don't feel I have to hide the labels on the rods or rip off the Simms label from my waders or my Cabella's boots. I don't feel I have to flaunt them about either. I just fish with them and have a good time doing it.
This seems to come up every once-in-awhile when busted rods and warranties are kicked around.
I bought my granddaughter an Elkhorn rod 5 years ago and she has had no problems with it. Sometimes there seems to be a bad run in production. Maybe this is what Steelies came up against. The difference is probably in quality control which Sage for instance has a very good program. But then there are always those that for one reason or another has to "knock" the big guys.

Just my opinion Larry, take it or leave it, there are many rods out there that cast beautifully, with an equal, if not better warranty than the big guys, at a fraction of the big guys price. All I'm saying is consumer beware.
