I am looking for any one who has tied and fished the halo mayfly or midge emerger. How it worked, how they fished it and where. Thanks,
Paul

I have tied and used the Halo Mayfly emerger on several northern Utah and southern Idaho streams with average success. It is a pretty good pattern and easy to tie. I don't remember using it last season, however.

I am not familiar with that fly. Is it an emerger pattern that has a REALLY long parachute post? Could you describe it to me? Thanks!

Go to Vladimir Markov's site at http://keeptying.8m.com/hme.html for a picture and a recipe.

I've used them before for PMD hatches (mainly on the Provo, but I did use it for March brown hatches in Washington), and did quite well. I haven't had as much luck with the Baetis for some reason. My friend uses them a lot and loves them -- for all kinds of hatches. Not a bad fly, by any means. I like to tie those kinds of flies with quill bodies instead of dubbing, or even a little of both to represent the emerger. Just depends on what the fish might be keying on. I'll fish it as a dry/emerger or sometimes you can just let it sink a little more to act as a drowned or crippled bug.

I have fished the halo the last 2 years during the Baetis hatch on the lower Provo at least 10 days in March and 10 days in April and have had very poor results. I've fished it as the lead fly or trailer and it did not seem to make much difference.

I will again try it this year in March and April and if no luck will drop it from my box. It may be just one of those flies that does not work for me.
