View Full Version : Scott Rod Blanks
I have recently been looking at making my own rod, and would like to do it with a scott Blank. Have any of you ever done this before? not just with a scott but any blank. I am looking for good resources to help mw know what I need to build my own rod. Any information you all could give would be appreciated.

I have built my own Sage rod from a blank and I love it, it's the rod I fish with everyday. Building rods are a lot of fun. I've had to build the tip section twice because I broke it (thank goodness for lifetime warranties--highly worth looking in to)
If you have any questions I'd be happy to help. It's been a while since I have built a handle section, but I'll help where I can.
Let me know what you need help with. If you want you can e-mail me with any questions justclimbit2@hotmail.com

When are you plan on doing, now or wait until winter when you have more spare time?
If you plan on waiting you can check with a local shop and see if they are going to have a rod building class in the fall/winter that is what I did.
Also the local shops that I go to are more than willing to help answer questions as far as guides & reel seat etc.
You will need to have access to a tread wrapper & rod dryer, some shops will rent these out.
take a look:

take a look at the links hope this helps.

UtahOTF will probably have another rod building class this Fall or Winter FWIW. The last one was a great success.
Sounds like you're in more of a hurry than that however!
I am in no hurry at all. The only thing that I have decided so far is that I want to use a scott blank. When is the next class going to be, and where is it going to be held at? Does it cost any money to sign up for the class? Thanks for all the help everybody. I really appreciate it.
The class will likely be held in the Salt Lake City area and will be taught by Chris Barkey of Uinta Fishing Co.

He's a custom rod builder and has several years of rod building and teaching experience. I think everyone who participated in the last class had a great time. The fee last time was like $50, not including materials of course.
As yet there is no official date for a class set unfortunately -- which doesn't help much I realize.

Besides the blanks and fee for the class, does anyone have an estimated cost of the rest of the material?
Guide sets:
Range from about 6 bucks for a pac bay set to $140.oo for fuji Ti gold cermets. these are NICE
Reelseat, 10 - 15 bucks will do, but nicer Ni silver from Struble or REC will go 35 - 50 bucks
Grip, 12 - 24 bucks depending on vendor. or you can use cork rings, not reccomended unluess you have acces to a lathe.
Thread, two bucks, add another three bucks for metalic for trim wraps,
Winding check. .25 for an HDPE, or about three bucks for a Struble Ni Silver
Hookeeper, well if you must, but no rodbuilder worth his/her buttwrap would ever reccomend one...
Riod finish, about 8 bucks, if you can get U-40, all the better, but flex coat, either lite or regular, will do.
Misc equipmnet: rat tail file, jewlers fle or whetsone, sand paper, rod stand, wrapping jig, bodkin, burnisher ( a bic pen works as well) lighter, devcon 2-ton eboxy, masking tape, ruler, tape measure, razor blades, alcohol, brushes, mixing cups syringes. rod turner.
that should about do it.
