I just want to say thanks for fishing. I did enjoy meeting you and fishing together, you are welcome anytime.

To all that read this I fished with ohmyheck on Friday, I learned one thing, I really enjoy fishing with a left handed FF, I can stand side by side and not have to worry so much about my eyes while we are both fishing.

Another great person from the website.

Son-
You should try teaching a southpaw / lefty to tie flies sometime.
It gets really weird!

And you're correct... a lefty, righty combo can work a stream real well.

I taught myself to cast *acceptably* with my left hand for those odd circumstances that we run into.

Sorry, but I couldn't even fish with anyone with the screenname Ohmyheck. That expression rubs me like a cheese grater against my..

oh nevermind.

Change your name! lol

Sorry Fred,

I certainly dont want you rubbing your self with a cheese grater!!!!!! I have this screen name for safety purposes! If I'm ever out flyfishing and get lost and happen to wander into another State those who find me will know where I'm from. You always have to be prepared for the unexpected Fred and think ahead.

Would you fish with me if I promise to never say that 8 letter expression????

Sure, if you like fishin with a good ol redneck, we can hook up. But don't be offended when i say some more colorful four, eight, or 12-letter expressions. lol. Especially when I miss a fish. "heck" is not the first word that crosses my mind. lol.

I would recommend anyone that gets an opportunity to fish with ohmyheck, take the time he is a real nice guy that gives one great company.

I hope I can fish again in a spot that he told me about.

I'm left-handed, but I tie flies right-handed.

.... the irony is the guy I usually fish with is also left handed... we do exist.. :)

ohmyheck....does sort of have that Utah feel to it.

I don't think you want me to teach you to tie for two reasons:
1) totally geographically undesireable.
2) there would be two right hand tying lefties on this forum.
(trying to teach a lefty really messed with my head!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
tachyon....
Do you reel right or left side? (Just to finish that confusing input from you :)
hey moke
sorry for any confusion.. when I'm at the tying bench I tie right-handed. I learned to tie this way so I could easily follow tying instructions.
I reel with my right hand, and cast with my left.
I hope this clears things up.
Welcome....and no need to apologize to this big old lug.
I just found your combianation of righty, lefty to be intriguing.
Like I said, I TRIED to teach a lefty to tie once, all the wrapping and everything went OK, we just ended up really sideways when it came time to whip finish :)
It all worked out in the end.
I'm like tachyon, I cast with my left, reel with my right. I also tie right handed, it's just always felt more comfortable, although I've had to adapt a couple of tehniques to my lafthandedness. My friend Cracker who taught me to flyfish is a lefty too, and Moke is right, he uses a halfhitch tool to finish off his flies, because nobody taught him to whip finish left handed. I showed him left handed a couple of times, even though it was weird fo me I can do it, but he is set in his style and the halfhitch tool works for him. I also shoot a gun, and bow right handed, weird HUH?
I'm right-handed. I cast with my right and when I hook a fish, I switch hands and reel with my right hand too. Anyone else fish this way? I just can't reel with my left hand.
RAW, you crack me up. If you could, would you want two right feet as well? LOL.
This reminds me, I've recently been trying to learn to cast with my left hand. Tough to say the least. IT's been especially useful for tight areas working up along the right side of the bank. I feel like a retard but I'm getting use to it. Anyone else efficient with both hands?
MOKE
Efficient is a broad term.
I have learned to efficiently cast out 45 ft of line or so, fairly well, left handed.
I have a harder time in the tending and mending portion.
I cast right, reel left, normally.
Just wait until you pull on a real big fish. Your good arm will outlast your bad-side arm everytime! ;)
I do pretty well lefty. I do somethings quite well and even better left handed. But ask me to write or throw a ball and I look like I'm upside down and drunk.
I have learned to cast right-handed with my arm across my body to the left side. Works great.
Jason...Someone once told me to put my best foot forward...I fell flat on my face. It's hard to move them both in a step at the same time. :)
Fred
You can also learn to cast left-handed by using both hands to begin with. It looks kind of awkward, but your left hand will learn from your right. Of course, you have to, like RAW says, be able to do an across the body cast to begin with.
I'm a lefty too( cast left, reel right-err, correctly) and my buddies beg me to partner up in the driftboats! Lefty-righty works great AND I cast righthanded as needed (doublehaul, too) Only problem is leftys talk too much & bogart the beer!
Just a question, if the purpose of being able to cast left handed is to avoid brush wouldn't a simply across the body roll cast with the right hand work 95% of the time? Now I can understand if you need to cast distance, MOKE at 45 feet is about the max I can see being needed in our local Utah streams. So again why put yourself through the frustration of trying to do something totally unnatural?
When I had my boat in SoCal, Leftys were welcome, even if they didnt bring the beer.
Although most trout in streams are probably cought with a cast less than 20 feet, learning everything you can about casting, with right or left or both, will only help you in the long run.
And besides, casting is fun, in-and-of itself.
And, FWIW, there is nothing more pathetic that some guy at a flats lodge bragging about what a fine trout fisher he is. The next morning, at the dock, people will be paying the guides not to have him as thier partner for the day. For Gods sake, learn to tighten up that loop prior to heading to destinations south!!!!
MOKE-like rant over.... ;-)
