I just found out I am going to Canada for three weeks next month (maybe I can escape the heat). I will be in Edmonton and I will have a rental car. I imagine there is decent fishing in the area but I have never been there. Any tips?

I'm in Calgary, but I watch this site to keep tabs on Utah fishing so I can plan my trips to visit family. It's nice when I can actually contribute to a conversation here.

There are a lot of places to fish in Alberta. No problems there. The hard part is deciding where to go. I moved here from Utah almost 2 years ago and have barely scratched the surface of the many waters in my own local area.

The Bow River is the most popular river for trout in the province. It's very big, has very big trout and lots of them, so it's most popular with good reason. If you're staying in Edmonton it would be a bit of a drive, though (about 3 hours). The Bow runs right through Calgary so it's nice and convenient for us here.

There are a several other very popular trout rivers south of Calgary (thus even farther from Edmonton) such as the Crowsnest and Oldman rivers.

Between Calgary and Edmonton there are some popular rivers like the Red Deer and the North Ram as well as smaller waters such as Stauffer Creek. And if you want to head even farther north you can always go try for some Arctic Grayling. Pothole lake fishing is particularly popular in the Edmonton area.

Sadly, there isn't a bulletin board quite as good as this one for Alberta. The one mentioned previously is sometimes helpful. Here are some other sites you should look into

Fly Fishing Edmonton

Fishin' Alberta Message Board

Fly Fish Alberta (they just got their message board working again)

The Outdoor Message Board (click on Alberta Fishing)

Trout Unlimited Canada - Edmonton Chapter (click on links and you'll get everything you can imagine)

And if you want to look through everything available, pick up the Alberta Fishing Guide, a magazine published every year and available everywhere in Alberta with maps and lists of everywhere there is to fish detailing types of fish present, conditions, etc.

The Alberta Fishing Regulations are here, if interested

Just curious as to why you moved to Canada. I am interested in living in the Vancouver BC area for a year but have heard that it is impossible for US residents to get jobs there. If you could clear this up for me that would be great. Just email me straight at fuggles7@hotmail.com
Thanks, Scott
