I'm headed to the San Juan "Quality Waters" below Navajo Dam in Mid-March. First, is it faster to go through Shiprock or Durango? I would also be happy if there was any other advice you could give me, I don't want to travel that far and be discouraged.
Thanks, Dan

Just some quick information. Last I heard, it is always packed, so go on days during the week (this comes as second hand information from a friend who went down in December -- it was pretty packed). Also, I think this edition of American Anglers or Fly Fisherman has two rivers to hit if crowded can ruin a day on the river. I loved the article. It is always good to have a good plan B and C, just in case. I don't think I am the only one who loves to be the only one on a stretch of river. It's a treat, actually.

I fished the San Juan just after Christmas. I believe the fastest way is through Durango, but we actually took a wrong turn and ended up going through Shiprock. The roads were dry and nice through Shiprock, snowy and dangerous through Durango on the way back, take your pick. As far as fishing advice, get on the river early and stake out the best looking hole or riffle you can find, come any later and it WILL be taken. Make sure and tie some yong specials size 24 or smaller, when the fish get selective on midges, these flies will save your day. Finally, bring a camera, the bows' are HUGE and incredibly colorful!
