I bought a pair of these at Western Rivers. They are black steel with a bright yellow rubber pad over one prong of the pliers. They are my first pair of hackle pliers, and I hate them. The rubber pad split and is worthless, and any hackle plier that comes to a point is a horrible design.
I wish I had bought an English style pair of hackle pliers instead. Those are the ones that have a round pair of jaws with one side scored metal and the other a rubber pad--though the ones I saw didn't fit my index finger.

Good hackle pliers are a must. I am in search of a new set, but I keep forgetting when I stop by the shop. There are so many other cool things to look at. I will pick up a pair this next week when I am in Utah.

What type works best for you, the ones I have tried either the hackle slips out or it will break the tip off. As far as the names to identify them I could not tell you. All I have ever called them are hackle pliers.
The one I am using now resemble this.

Have you tried the Griffin Rotary hackle pliers? They work quite well especially on parachute patterns.

Your links don't work for me Trout4x, but to me it doesn't make any sense for a pair of hackle pliers to come to a point. It's already hard enough to get the feather between the jaws, so why would I want the the jaws to narrow? Also, why should a pair of hackle pliers separate if you don't squeeze them just right? To me the English style hackle pliers solve both these problems, but the ones I've seen aren't big enough for my index finger. If you have a small enough finger, I think those are the way to go.
