Anyone ever fished for Gold in CA? If so, would you be willing to share where you went and/or suggestions on other areas?

A good friend of mine lived in Sac for a few years and we had a trip all set up where I was going to fly out, but then his wife started twisting his sac and the pansy bailed. This was in the late 1990's. He had it all set up though-we were going to hike into the Kern River drainage and camp/fish on one of the forks. Would have been about 15 miles in and taken two days of hiking. I forget fork it was, but one of them has a major trail going through the drainage and is reportedly "overrun". We were going to the other one, which would have involved some off trail stuff, but supposedly was completely remote. The word on the Kern River drainage is small fish, but catching some goldens out of their home range would have been pretty cool. I've seen some pics of the river and it looks pretty skinny. I know there are some lakes in the Sierra's with some pigs in it (look at one of Randall Kaufmann's books - either tying nymphs or tying dries and he has a pic of a huge golden he caught in the Sierra's in there). Anyway, wish I could be more helpful, but that's all I really know about gold in CA. Good luck and let us know if you go how you did...
