View Full Version : How long is it
Marty

I caught this fish yesterday. I taped it so I know how long it is. With all the talk about miss measuring fish I thought it might be fun to see who could come the closest on an estimate. Remember I am on the big side and my hands are just a little larger than average. The fish is a female rainbow (not a steelhead) caught 40 minutes from my home.
Most anglers would say that bow is 33". I'll take a stab and say 24"

Tough to tell without seeing the whole thing (IE-tail) and tough to tell when I don't know exactly how big you are, so I'll give a range. I would say that fish goes somewhere between 21 3/4 and 22 1/4 inches. If you're a really big dude, that might push 22.5-23, but I'm betting closer to 22".

I suspect a PGA golf tournament is being played very near the pond.
I think it is close to 20.75 inches. It is a nice fish. If you have pics of the other fish let's see the ones that were bigger.

How large are your hands? Have you ever measured from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your middle finger?
My hand from thumb to middle finger is 8 inches. It sure makes it easy to get a "good" estimate of fish size when I don't have a tape measure with me.

Actually, if a fish is worth measuring, I usually just throw it down next to my rod and find something to mark it with, whether some of the thread or lettering is there, maybe a nick or something. I usually remember right where it went, unless I catch more than a couple that large.

34 X 19, I thought it was bigger.
Either way looks like it could tear up some tackle, definitely not a boot. Its the narrative that I care about. You're swinging along trying to read water, looking for lies along their travel route. Maybe hours go by, maybe days with no sign. Then WHAMWHAMWHAM! I can only imagine what it feels like.
Wild steelhead have almost a ghost-like mystique about them, the way they are solitary and so little is known of their time at sea. I just hope they are not all gone 10 years from now.
