My wife is 8.9 months pregnant. The doctor told her today she is dilated to 2cm and 50% effaced, and that she could have the baby today or it could still be two weeks (Her due date is the 20th). Here is the problem. I just got a shipment of really nice hopper flies (Grumpy Frumpies) and this may be the last weekend of good hopper fishing an hour away on no tellum creek (with little or no cell coverage). I was going to go on Monday but my flies showed up late and the weather sucked.
What is a fly fishing addict to do?

lol... oh, boy.. or girl.
I'd be getting a satellite phone asap... as this could be your last time to fish for awhile ; )
Congrats on your future fishing partner.
Reposa, aka, Foul Hooked,
Here is how I look at this situation: What child is this? First? Tenth? I would say that if it is anything less than your 5th, half your fly fishing gear will be taken from you in the divorce if you miss the birth anyway. Consider it a business decision! Or, you can look at it from the point of view that there will always be days to fish. But that child will only be born once. Is it worth the risk? Get your wife doing jumping jacks!
Signed,
Person who understands your plight
PS- our doctor told my wife when we had our daughter that "what got you into this will get you out of this." Just something to think about..... :)

and he will be my second little boy. I am looking forward to Sawtooth backpacking trips. I keep threatening to take our oldest (2 & 1/2 years) down the whitewater at lunch counter at lower flows. Mom is having nothing to do with it..... Maybe next year.

Foul Hooked: Since there is little or no cell coverage at no tellum creek, leave the cell phone at home so that your wife can call an ambulance if needed. Enjoy the fishing.

I missed a week long fishing trip to a private cabin in AK to be there for the birth of my 2nd. I was not a happy man, but in the long run I think it worked out. I even got to go the next year "all expenses paid" (work conference)--about two weeks after the runs were done.

Personally I do anything and everything I can to avoid.......... "THE LOOK".
Stay home, be attentive, and bank the brownie points!!! There is a reason I refer to the Mrs as SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed).

Foul,
Those pukey flies probably won't catch anything anyway. Stay home and get tying a bunch of nymphs.

First you don't need a doctor to tell her this. Just get some rubber gloves and check it for yourself. If you want to go fishing today check her before you leave and let her know that she is still the same 2 cm and she'll be fine till you get back. Even if she is at 5cm tell her she still is at 2cm, chances are you'll be OK till your done fishing.

For some reason "brownie points" are a myth in my house. I come home early from a trip but it doesnt make going out any easier the next time. So for me, its take advantage of every minute you get because you dont know when it will come around again.

I faced this situation 2 weeks ago. My wife was dilated to a 3 and 75% effaced. I had two different offers for fishing trips that weekend, both which I really wanted to go on. I ended up not going and my wife did not have our baby. Looking back, I still think I made the right decision. I would have sucked to miss that event. Like it was said earlier, they are only born once and those first few hours with them never are replicated. P.S. this was my second. I bet a few years from now you'll remember the birth of your child much better than any fish you'll catch.

Is that what they teach for sex ed in happy valley these days?
If it is, it's time to move.
Cort, it's OK to leave some threads without a comment and this would have been one of them.
Raps, stay home and keep your wife company. The fish will be there and if not they will be easy to find again.
