Big Hole in the fall is unreal, but the water levels are pretty low and all fo the floats I have done in the fall have been in a raft. Would be good for 'toons though. I know your prob looking for floats with the new Clacka (Its a Clacka, right?)... This year might be an exception for water levels .. I will be up there around Oct 1 and will give you an update.

I have not been up to the Bighorn, but there is an article on fishing it in the fall in the latest American Angler you might want to checkout. I was considering either it or the Missouri this fall for a new destination.

I hear that the Provo River is a good float this time of year...

...all smart-ass comments aside, I've often thought that I would like to float a few different sections of the Bow River. But, I haven't done it yet...

I have heard the New River out of Pinedale is something you would not forget. Never been there myself.

New Fork – not in a drift boat, the upper green maybe if you can row. If you are looking for something to float just head north.

I've floated a lot of rivers in Mt., Wy., and Id., and for me, nothing beats the South Fork. My favorite section is the one that is fishing the best. Although I think my favorite section is Heise to Lorenzo, Lots of Browns and lots of structure to fish.

I think a good maiden voyage for your boat would be on the Henrys fork, the section from Riverside to Hatchery Ford.

Can't wait to see pics of the new vessel. Did you decide on a motor?

I was just kidding about the HF Riverside to Hatchery Ford section, keep your boat out of that section unless you want to beat the hell out of it and there's a good chance of flipping it and pinning it against a rock in that section.

Just got back from a float on the Kitimat River in Western B.C....I'd take that over anything in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, or Montana. The Dean River and the Bella Coola River are destinations I would like to try sometime too...

But, stateside, I'd be interested in floating the Green from the Farson Bridge down pretty much to the town of Green River. I have also always been interested in floating the New Fork...but have never done it.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions!

Maiden voyage will be three days on the SF this weekend. I can't wait!
The boat will see a lot of upper and middle Green floats. WyomingtoUtah will you be so kind to email me about Farson Bridge to Green River stretch?

Upper green by Pinedale Is a great float but loooong.. Also the Newfork is good but skinny water with a few very narrow places. Both floats are an all day affair due to the access. Recommend an elec. motor to get thru the slow places and at the end of the day when you are only half way to the takeout and only 1 hr. of daylight left. at least 12+ hrs on the water but well worth it. Oh ya don't forget a flashlight you might need it to fing the takeout.

The "Rock" creek in Montana, and the canyon section of Clarkes Fork of the Yellowstone. I'll still run a hopper, copper , and dropper, 7.5' 4x, 28" 5x, 12 - 16 " 6x, use florocarb, just to be on the safe side. might have up size on dropper if not gettin down deep enough for the big boys.

I have some in-laws that own a cattle ranch up here and I've never been up though I will.
South Fork of the Snake
Clark Fork west of Missoula.
Upper Green
Rogue- ( permit and 3 days at least needed) unreal scenery though.
Did I mention the Clark Fork ? Brewery in Missoula- (Moose Drool)

Not much h20 on the Smith in the Fall- but it is a river to float if you draw out earlier in the year.

Its been several years since I posted but I was browsing yesterday and saw this post and it got me thinking. I always get something different out of each float and have broken down my 5 favorite floats according to 1. "scenery floats" and 2. Fishing floats. I also included my five "least favorite" floats according to massive crowds, froggy water, and/or big wind. Still love the worst floats, but at times they are rough. Here they are

Scenery
1. Snake River by Jackson WY - Moran Junction to Deadmans
2. South Fork of the Snake ID - Canyon section
3. Salmon River, ID between Salmon and North Fork
4. Bitterroot River, MT above Missoula
5. Yellowstone River above Livingston
Honorable mention - Blackfoot River, MT Big Hole River, MT and Green River UT during "off-season"

Fishing
1. Missouri River MT - any of the 15-20 miles from Wolf Creek Bridge to Pelican Point
2. South Fork of the Snake
3. Bitterroot River, MT
4. Stillwater River, MT (raft only on this one-rough and tumbly)
5. Lower Henry's Fork (when the winds not howling that is-then its one of the worst)
Honorable mention - Madison River below Slide Inn

Least favorite floats
1. Green River anytime from April to August. LDS Ward "fun floats" and 100 guides a day. Need I say more?
2. Madison River below Beartrap Canyon. Froggy and windy. Big, big fish but the population is lower
3. Madison River during Salmon Fly time - you'll never experience a bigger Cluster F than this
4. Henry's Fork - Box Canyon. Probably get some heat about this one
5. Lower Henry's Fork - Ririe to Chester when the winds blowing. Froggy as hell at the bottom and the wind always blows upstream. Had to abort this float more than once.

I've been lucky enough to be able to spend some time on some good waters and it was fun to think about this post.
