View Full Version : semi-local creek, colorado

each time i drive over to colorado to visit my kids i stop into royal gorge anglers in canon city and chat with the owner. while i was in there this time i asked him about a place i could take my kids cause my daughter is not worth a damn with casting a fly rod yet, so i was looking for someplace fairly easy for her to fish. he old me of a creek that is basically a locals only type place, meaning they don't talk about it other publisize it in any way. he gave me directions and yesterday we finally had a chance to fish it, although my daughter had started school yesterday so she could not go. it is a creek about the size of currant creek and i was informed that hoppers would be he ticket. me and my son both rigged up with hoppers and off we went. it was the first time i have ever caught anything on a hopper and my sons first time doing anything but nymphing, i think he is now hooked on dries. all total between the 2 of us in about 5 hours of fishing we caught only around 8 fish, lost somewhere in the 20's and saw many other fish either follow or smash at our flies without a hook-up. i could hear a lot of frustration coming from my son with all the fish he was missing. most of the fish were in the 10-12" range with a couple of 15-16" fish caught. it was a fun day with my son.

Looks like a cool place! I'm sure it was awesome seeing your boy get into a few... on dry's ; )

hush hush and the south platte is like hush hush and the provo............since we are not in colorado it's called grape creek

Nice. I'm itching to fish a small creek like that one....and with hoppers!

I bet the problem with hooking up was that the fish would come up for the hopper, see you sons shirt, and run away! Haha, I'm only kidding. I only say that because I remember an outing on a small creek where I was wearing some royal blue basketball shorts (not sure why I wore them to be honest) and the fish were spooking all over the place. That was frustrating, so now I always try to wear subtle colors.

Anyway, looks like a great time with some decent fish.
