With it being that time of year, wondering what everyone's favorite terrestrial pattern is that you like to throw.

We need to get you out on some hopper water. No cicadas or beetles???

And I like to throw terrestrials too.

favorite terrestrial pattern

Yes Please.

I don't have a favorite because there's so many & they're so fun to throw, but a parachute ant is hard to beat. The other day, I got snubbed by a rather large & delicious looking cutthroat. I'd tossed a larger black foam sticky rubber legged thingee at him & I could almost here him laugh as he refused it. Rather than continue to work him with the same fly, I exercised patience & sat down to tie on a #18 parachute ant. I rested the fish for a minute & he took the ant on the 1st good cast, which happened to be the 3rd cast. It was a mouth wide open, no hesitation take & I stuck that picky fat bastard real good. The ant brought a few more to hand as the afternoon of fishing wound down. I guess it's all relative for me, I let the fish dictate which one they want. ;-)

Never get tired of The Madam ..... I've got three terrestrial boxes full of creepy crawlers ....
WN's TFH's are a nice choice.... Chernobyl's ...... big honkin' orange stimmies ....sailor ants.....like be asked to pick a favorite wife......they've all got their special attribute.

Sounds like a pretty decent philosophy to me!

I agree with Grizz, the parachute ant kicks ass. I really don't have a favorite terrestrial, mainly cuz i've had some great fishing over the years on all of them. If I could only have one terrestrial to fish all year though I would probably have to go with an ant, it's saved me several times on picky fish. The Letort hopper is also a must have in my fly box come late summer. It's a fly you don't seem to hear about much, but the fish sure like it.

i've thrown cicadas, hoppers, chernobles, stimmies and various others but only seem to hook up with an ant.

WN's twisted foam hopper. I have one, and I've fished the crap out of it. Lots of fun.

I have fished and caught fish with just about every terrestrial out there. However, I have never caught anything on an ant. WTF????? then again I have never caught anything on a san juan worm until I went with o'l "Nich" up to a little nice stream.

Pat, you beat me to it. I've never caught anything on an ant either, to my surprise. Or a san juan worm, I always seem to lose them whenever I tie them on...

Parachute cricket saved my last trip up to the SF. When fish are refusing the big stuff try the cricket.

I like to fish the largest bugs that will still work and not twist the leader when casted. I remember fishing down at Brown's park around 18 years ago, and the mormon cricket hatch was crazy. At any given time there would be 1000's of giant crickets on the water. I don't know why they were in the water but it was nuts. You would only see a fish rise once in a blue moon. Needless to say we only caught a couple fish that day and they were on san juan worms. Have not witnessed anything like it since.
