View Full Version : Naming flies

What goes into the name of a fly? I have been "creating" lately, and I have a few really sweet names in my head that I want to be able to use. I recently tied up the "Raging Ogre" which is a mess of chartreuse and white materials tied to two razor sharp hooks that are tandemly connected. I also tied a fly called the "Big Lurch" which is basically just like a bass jig. It has about a pound of sili legs and moose hair for weed guard purposes. These still need to go to the testing staff (ME because they are bass flies) and they will get tweaked. I'm fairly confident that there is nothing exactly like these bugs, but I like to make sure nobody is already using the name of my new creation. I just don't want any confusion like I have when I see a fly and have to determine whether it's a Griffith's Gnat or Uncle Ken's Peacock King... Or seeing a bug (that is pretty much a Griff's Gnat) and having to determine whether it's the local fuzzball, or Rick Peterson's Fantastic Fish Catching and Locally Bought Skittering Midge. Those flies are pretty much the same dang thing.

Chris... BTW, that big bug has a name now. Petite Sirloin Stone.

I almost threw it yesterday but wanted to keep it so I chose not to. It's going to stay in the box until further replacements arrive. I was stunned to see lingering large bugs (pternocus californicatin) where I fished yesterday along with clicking noises everywhere (not a surprise). Large timber rolling down the river attached to large bodies cracking was exciting along with nearly broken bones slipping through log jams. I gotta settle down. Today was outta the question duh to aches and strains.
Regarding names, hah, we all got em. I prefer numbers. Old No 7 is always a good one.

family friendly. Some parent was telling me the trouble that their 12 year old fly tyer got into when doing a google search on the infamous "sex dungeon." Seems he found some sites that were not fishing related.

Thats a whole other story. Pour Galloup has to change the names of his flies to fit his internet site and retailers like Cabelas. To bad I really like them and it fits his personality well.

Cheech you have a winner with the "Mormon Minivan".

How about: Bart's Stink Fly? Good for at least one wiper!
Just do like everyone else and put your name "Cheech" in front of everything you tie. people will then know it is tied with quality and tested by the best fly fishers in the west.

Cheech in all honesty (yes I'm being serious for a change). It's hard to name a fly without seeing it...

It seems to me most flies were named historically based on the insect they were trying to imitate and the material that was being used (bh zebra midge, soft hackle, etc.) Then when people came up with variations that were applied across whole groups of flies they added their names to them (Quigley, Rainey, Dave, etc.) Flies that were broadly imitative often had their originator's monicker attached (adams, barr, etc.) Then you get the more recent flies that are more playful - Galloup's and Cheech's being illustrative.

It's your fly, you name it. You don't even have to get agreement from your wife.

TS30's reference made me recall a Bob & Tom song, which could be a fly name with the spelling changed to reflect how it is fished: CamelTOW

The moves mentioned could be used as fly names:

Dirty Musky

Ha -- one of them is actually Minivan!

Thresher......oh man.....RALMAO!

Cheech-O, I personally like the "Triple Whopper with Cheese" because it makes me hungry. And if I'd want to eat that fly, I'm sure the little fishies would like to as well. "I figure I only have about 3 more years until I start thinking like a fish!"
