I have a question regarding waders, but I need to preface it...
So, my with the help of my girl friend, last month a selection on a ring was made, and I'm planning on proposing to her on a hike in Montana in July. Since she knows it's coming, she getting all excited as girls usually do, and is starting to think of all the wedding stuff, including engagement pictures. Guys and gals, this is one of the emails she sent me today....
"I LOVE LAKES!!!!
I think I'll love them even more when I get to start fishing in them with you!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait for our wader-wearing-engagement-shots
I can't believe your friends didn't believe a girl would want to do that. They obviously don't know me"
I am the LUCKIEST guy on EARTH!!!! Now, I just need to get her some waders, and am thinking that some hip boots would be pretty hot on her for the pics. Now, I know we need to have some style here, so what waders do you all think would make for the best engagement photos, as well for some fishing? We'll have an appointment with the photographer in September.
you guys sure you dont want to spend a week in the woods with these two love-sick puppies?
;-)

You can't go wrong with Patagonia waders. Cloudveil, William Joseph, and Simms also produce high quality wading gear at various price points. One thing to keep in mind, most waders are going to come in subdued colors that mimic or blend in with surrounding environs. When you choose your "ensemble" for the photos make sure to have some bright colors (hats, shirts, etc) to provide some additional visual interest (in addition to your lovely bride-to-be). Randall Kaufmann always has a brightly colored bandanna around his neck in the photos I've seen of him. That alone is usually enough to add some variety. Sounds like a fun project. Bring the ring when you come through town next month. I've got a box we might be able to fit it in.

I'm leaning towards her wearing some hip waders, as chest waders just aren't that flattering. I guess that goes for me too, but am still looking for ideas....

How about wearing vests instead? When you purchase waders you are looking at the cost of the waders plus a pair of boots for the little misses. You can get a top of the line vest for what an average pair of waders will cost and you will likely get more use out of the vest. Patagonia recently redesigned their vests and you can get the past years model for under $100. Here is an active listing on e-bay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/PATAGONIA-MESH-MASTER-FISHING-VEST-WOMAN-LG-RETAIL-120_W0QQitemZ380036021998QQihZ025QQcategoryZ7299QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I've got a brand-new Patagonia Men's mesh vest in size large that you are welcome to use for the photos. The vests will pack down small and light if you are planning on taking the photos in the backcountry thus saving you weight and space for something like a small tripod. Vests, wading boots with neoprene socks (wet wading gear) would be a functional, economical, good looking set up for you both.

Sorry Steve, but a vest isn't going to keep her dry when we're standing in the stream getting the picture taken, so we need the waders first.....

As you will be in Montana, what about popping into Dan Bailey in Livingston and trying thier waders?
I will also be in MT in July (first 2 weeks in July over from the UK) but leaving my wife at home! (with her agreement of course!!!)
All the best for the future
Cheers

I thought you were asking for waders that you would actually end up *using* not just something for the photos. Hip waders are probably great for a photo but useless otherwise.
Since you're looking for form over function, just buy the cheapest Cabela's hipsters you can find.

Good point, Steve. It's not just about looks, and I digressed. If we're going to be living in Montana after I finish school, they will get abuse and she needs a good pair. I'm actually looking at some that could take some wear, and like some Patagonias (I have wadelight's myself) and thought a matching pair would be cool. I, however, have not put the shoulder straps down on any of my waders to convert them to waist waders, and was wondering if that actually works well on some models. Perhaps better on some models than others? That way I could get her a good pair, she wouldn't have to have them up to her shoulders for the pics, and we could get our money's worth.
I can't afford much more than $150, and I want to get the best bang for the buck. I've never had to shop for woman's waders before, so this is a bit different....

This sounds like an Orvi$ or LL Bean situation. They could also hook you up with the matching plaid button downs, stylishly distressed dungarees and monogrammed satchels for you, your bride, and your dog!

Idea, I have a pair of dan baileys and they can be converted to hip waders. Save the pocket book and buy the Dan Baileys, roll them down to hip waders, then roll them back up to fish in. Hip waders suck for fishing in all the time. But you could roll them down when you want and for the pictures. I am pretty sure a few other brands do the same thing.

Orivs Clearwaters. They have a womens version and have the opposing buckles so they can be turned down into waist-highs. IMO, they're good enough for frequent use but won't break the bank.

Cabela's has a nice series of feminine looking waders:

Of course, I am biased.....

I didn't read the entire thread I don't have time. But I didn't see where anyone said it. Your getting married are you freaking crazy???? don't fix it if it ain't broken. She love all of that stuff until she sucks you in with marriage. Run away run far far away.
On a different note congrats. Is this engagement going to be after the Winds trip? And does she have any hot friends? If so, do you think that you could get them to go on the Winds trip? I would love to go if that is the case.

Nick, thanks for the email.
Sorry gents, she is a lone girl with a bunch of brothers, so no suitable sibs for the taking. She's awesome. A couple of my buddies are coming, so we've invited a couple of her friends to come to the Winds and even out the ratio, but none have committed. All other girls need to realize that if they could commit to annual trips like this, then guys would commit to them in a heart beat.....
Thanks for the responses so far, they've helped....

Hold the phone if you invite a bunch of girls on a trip like that you are asking for your trip to be shorter hikes. Don't take sand to the beach!!!! :)

She only invited girls she traveled with internationally AND have done difficult hikes with. One she's hiked Timp and traveled to Ghana with.
I do screen people when I invite them on trips....
I figure nobody on this site would decide to hit the Winds if they couldn't hack 40+ miles and thought they would embarrass themselves....

Ah very true very true. What kind of packs, sleeping bags, and tents are you guys taking.
Lewiskm3
06-19-2008, 05:22 PM
I a pack a down bag by sierra designs, a vortex pack that I think is 4500cc (give or take), an MSR Zoid 2 tent. I know my girl has some down bag from North Face and Jansport pack. My cousin's coming and has a Eureka tent, same pack as me (kind of embarrassing as he got the same color too) and similar garb. To minimize weight in the Winds we'll distribute the necessary gear that we can share, like first aid kit, camp stove(s), water filters, ect.
