For those that are interested, the DWR will be doing some fish spawning and collections tomorrow (June 18th) up at Mnt Dell Res from 10am-2pm. They are supposed to be doing it near Mountain Dell Res near the golf course right off the road there. They will be collecting big cutts, stripping and fertilizing eggs, and releasing the fish. They can always use an extra hand. It's a great opportunity to see first hand some of the brood stock work for Bonneville cutts that the DWR is doing. And I can guarantee you'll see some HUGE cutts being collected out of that Mtn Dell res.....which no one can fish. Should be interesting. I think I'll be going up there for a few hours tomorrow...should be fun. Bring your waders and boots. If you go up let them know you heard about it from the Stonefly Society. Questions can be directed to Brock at 801-557-1977. Thanks.

I would, but it would put a black spot on my future plans to run for office.

What would the fine be anyways?

The DWR has been collecting Bonneville Cutts and spawning them for years now and they've been quite successful so far. I went up on Wednesday and got a few pics of the process for those that haven't seen it before. Interesting stuff.

As you may know, you cannot trespass or fish on Mountain Dell Res. Currently it is used for Salt Lake water and for brood stock for bonnie cutts. This creates a perfect scenario for fish to grow big, survive, and spawn without any fishing pressue. Here's the play by play on how it goes down.

1. Tuesday the DWR shocked the inlet stream and collected over 100 fish and put them in holding bins at the inlet.
2. Wedneday they setup camp on the bank and prepared the area for "spawning". The eggs cannot see sunlight so they try and keep the area shaded as much as possible. They then measure and weigh each fish that is collected......and create a "soup line" as they pass the fish from person to person to complete the process.
3. The helpers start to collect the fish from the holding bins and bring them up to large buckets of water next to the tent. One at a time they take the fish and dip them in a calming solution which allows them to handle them gently.
4. They start out with about 15 females...weigh and measure them, then pass them to the designated "stripper". He takes the fish and pushes the eggs out. SOme fish have no eggs, others have a TON. The eggs are squirted onto a screen until they get a certain amount of eggs. The eggs are then put into a blue bucket and prepared for fertilization. The GOOD eggs are sticky and opaque....the bad eggs are hard and do not stick to one another and even have an "eye" in the egg. They discard the bad eggs.
5. Then they take out 15 males, measure and weigh them, and then the stripper "milks" the males directly into the blue bucket which is full of eggs. They stir and mix them together as to complete the fertilization.
6. The eggs are then taken to a holding bucket and they start all over again.
7. All fish are put into buckets of water until it's time to take them back to the lake and released.
8. The whole process takes about 8 people to complete

Note: I tried to post the pics in the order of process as best I could. Enjoy!

For those that are interested in participating, they will be doing it again next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday they will be shocking the inlet and collecting the fish. Wednesday they will be spawing the fish and collecting the eggs. You're more than welcome to help or just observe.
