I know some of the other guys on the board have tons of info in the SD area, but if you are you looking for a guided trip. Bowan goes out for Makos on the fly .. I have been out with him before and I'll be going out w/ him again on July1. http://www.bowmanbluewater.com/

I have also gone out with Peter Piconi http://www.flyfishsandiego.com/ to do some surf fishing. I did NOT get a corbina... Damn it! His inland kelp bed day looks like a blast and is def on my list for the next time I go out.

Feel free to email me if you want any more info.

Conway Bowman has a show called "Dollarwise Fly" on Versus, and a couple of months ago he did a show in san diego. He was fly-fishing for blue sharks. It was freaking nuts. Here are some excerpts from the show.

Great show too. I wish it had a regular schedule.

Have any of you guys just gone down and thrown a fly into the surf with a sinking line and caught fish? I don't want to pay $400 bucks for a day of fishing.

Alex, let me know what you find out when you go down there. I have to go there for 5 days in October and I plan on taking my snorkeling stuff, my fly rods and renting a surf board. Those are the only 3 things I plan on doing those days.... well if my girlfriend tells me I can ;-)

You can rent a motor boat with a trolling motor for $20 down there. There is a world record bass in that lake. That's where I'd be.

It is 200$ for a guide for 1/2 day fishing the surf. I had never fished in the surf and it was worth it to me. Do a google search for "surf fishing for corbina", you'll come up with tons of info. Basically, a 6wt, sink tip, stripping basket, and strip it in. I caught a couple of surf perch ... and you could get into a corbina. Head into the SD fly shop http://www.sandiegoflyshop.com/ for some flies and info. They are really cool guys.

Watch your back cast on the beach! ;)

There is a guy out of either Davy Jones Locker that goes for baby mako sharks, but it could be the same guy Raff was referring to that also stalks blue sharks.

You could always get online and find His & Hers Fly shop in Costa Mesa and they could refer a few outfitters.

Have fun. I love San Diego.

You stole my line!!!!!! I was just chomping at the bit to write that as I was reading through this thread. Greatest comedy of all time......

"Experts agree the translation was lost centuries ago."

I'm not a big Disney Land guy since I don't like rides, but Sea World is a great place. But, to each his own....and catching a blue shark on a fly sounds pretty sick.

I'm kind of out of it on the SoCal inshore/ surf stuff. But you cant go wrong hitting any of the beaches, esp early AM on the incoming side of a minus tide, casting to holes in the surf. there should be plenty of surf perch around, and you should see corbina this time of year. the first ones you'll see will be behind you, just mutter "WTF" and keep fishing. There's a shitload of patterns for the surf on the internet, most of the effective ones look like orange wooly buggers. weith them you wnat then rollong around on/in the sand. you can do this with a six wt and and a sink tip line. bring a stripping basket.

Have fun and kick Mickey in the nuts.

Makos Kick ACE!!!! That's the first fish I ever caught in the salt and they have some SERIOUS pow-pow!

Cheech has a good point too. If you're into bass, those lakes give you a shot at a potential world record. Which, by the way, would make you a millionare.

By the way, CHEECH, being a converted bass fiend, you need to get yourself to Mexico. RIDICULOUS! Some of the best fishing of my life.

California is a little different. Maybe if you do not have a hook on your fly, you can probably get away with it.

Hey we want to see some pictures of them, got any? Did you fly fish for them mexican bass?

I've got a few pictures some pictures , but not many good ones. Almost all of the pictures we took were on my Bother's friend's camera and when we left the lake the last day he left it on the bumper. So presumably some guy in Mexico has pictures of most of the biggest bass I've ever caught. We took just a few on my brother's camera too and I'll email a couple to you, but don't by any means let these remaining pictures make you think that 8 pound bass are the biggest you'll catch. On the contrary, you don't even take out the camera for fish that are less than 7.

We did catch them on the fly up to 10 pounds. Truth be told, we fished with conventional tackle for probably most of the day. When the sun was high the fish were deeper and the action hotter with gear than with fly. It was in the early morning and in the late afternoon right through dark, when the shadows got long, that the fatties started to move into the shallow coves. They started tearing up the shad and we started tearing them up on poppers and especially Dahlberg divers.

By the way, don't think that you're going to land the big ones down there on an 8 weight. Where they like to bust the shad there are trees, sticks and logs in great abundance and they know how to use them very effectively. Even with Medium-Heavy Baitcasting tackle there are some fish in there that we hooked which kicked our aces literally in seconds. You could maybe land those 14-16 pounders in open water, but when they're among the sticks, as they usually are, the scenario goes something like this: <BOOM> the toilet flushes, you set and then two things can happen: 1) You lift, like you do on any bass to try to keep him from the wood, but your line just rips through the water as he freighttrains you to his log and starts making laps. You think to yourself, "I'm 10 times heavier than this fish and I can't pull locked-down drag from a Curado the way that fish just did." So you set your drag to "uber-tight" 4 wheel ABS mode and set yourself up for situation 2) You lift, like you do on any bass to try to keep him from the wood, but your line just rips through the water as he freighttrains you to his log... this time trailing mono. All jaws hit the water as you stand there with a mixture of anger with gratitude that your rod didn't explode in your hands when he made that lunge, and Novel-inspiring wonder as to what size of bass pops 30 lb. P-line without a pause. Bottom line: when you're in the sticks and using anything resembling castable tackle, the biggest bass are going to make it to the nearest wood with or without you attached to the other end.

You can imagine that a fly rod doesn't make the fighting any easier.

The only way I landed even the almost-11-pound bass that I did, was that he made too few laps around that tree so I was able to pull and slide his head up against the trunk to get netted. Thank the heavens for miraculous abrasion resistance.

So you'll catch douple digit fish (hopefully on the surface!), but seeing and hooking ones that still put your best of the trip to shame keeps you humble. The bass gawds like humility.

Royal- That trip was to Lago "El Salto". The following year my brother went with the same buddy but without me to "Bacarac" (<-sp?). They actually had more topwater action for more of the day, but didn't catch any of the the really big bass like we did before (especially me ;o) ). See, when you abandon your little bro for the second trip, all the mojo stays home with him. I have to believe that had I been there, the sows would have wallowed.

Cheech, I'm experiencing withdrawals. Take me out on your boat for some bassin' and I will spill all the dirty details to help you prepare for your trip.

"P.S. I converted to trout 8 years ago, now I just consider myself a member of both Fishligions."

I learned bassing from a great instructor who had his own TV show down in AZ for such things. The first bass of my young life I caught in his boat: 8.5 pounds! Simultaneously I learned flyfishing from another miyagi who was very purist. Nowadays I try to mix the two "fishligions" whenever possible. For the times when it's not so possible I have 2 spinning and 2 baitcasting rigs. Gotta get the fatties to hand one way or another, right?

Here i am another day. The heat is growing so unbearable. Patients are very thin. Its only 11:40 and the kids have already had several crying episodes with the COUSINS REE REE REE..... I'm sitting here on the couch with sweat rolling down my face because they say the AC is to cold and the ice maker is broken. I can't go play basketball because the same 5 damn kids have been on the court since Sunday. I should go see if they are legals or not. As I tried to watch a movie last night everyone wanted to go to the pool but me so I volunteered to watch some kids. After two episodes of vomitting I was lucky enough to get to clean up one of the kids barf that was all over the floor. HoneyNut Cheerios and milk. We are heading to the beach in 15 minutes two sit under the hot sun. Its funny how kids cry because they have sand on them every time you go to the beach and yet every day they want to go. Why don't they just smack thereselves in the toe with a hammer and get the whole thing over with.
It is beach time now if anyone could tell me where to find a great white that would be great. I'll keep you posted.
