So with my tying I tend to tie up 3 or 4 of a pattern that I have followed the recipe for, then I get bored. I like to switch stuff around, put this there, try some of this instead of that, forget this step and and make up for it somewhere else. Where is the point that you call it your own? and do you guys name your stuff you have made up or just call it the "really buggy looking green sparkle thing that kinda looked like a San Juan worm yesterday".

As soon as you write the magazine article that gets accepted in one of the better flyfishing magazines about how great it is and how because it has your name it will catch more fish... aka andy kim. I mean 3.00 for a midge larva imitation. And then make sure you put something like this on your hyped up website "He is the only one who ties them, and he has a limited supply. The only people who can obtain them are his clients, previous clients, and friends." Like you cant tie them yourself????? Duh. Then you can call it your own.

I just fish my stuff. I guess if you were trying to advertise it for some reason, you would name it. I don't have the need so if anybody asks I just say "sort of like a ______ but with ______ and ______ instead". They can't go buy one and won't have one in their boxes so I figure the name doesn't matter really. Most of my flies that really work well fall into this category.
There's a limited supply of each of my flies so I guess for a price I would part with some of them. I'm the only one that ties them and so unless you hire me as a guide or become a close friend through disclosing great fishing waters to me your chances of success on the river are slim...... ;)

Colby- I like your style with tying. The only time that I tie a specific pattern that looks the same dozen upon dozen is when I'm tying for a customer. My fly boxes have variations of variations of variations. Naming a fly is risky business. Some get really uppity when they think you have "ripped" something off. In my opinion, there are too many "extended body green drake cripple" patterns and not enough Circus Peanuts. Galloup is a masterful fly namer.

Are you a big guy in your own mind?? This calling me "lil" means something from a cheech/grizz type not my little brother type.
and Chance is not to blame for your day dreaming even though he is hot.

Sometimes I'm big in my own mind and sometimes I'm just a " lil' " guy too... Depends on the day really. It was more just a term of endearment. I call Hopper-Dropper that all the time and he's my best friend. I could call you sport, slugger, MFRW etc.... To bad somebody already has the name ball taster ; )

I think we've discussed this before but I always seem to chime in. I'll admit, I've been on the uppity end and felt ripped off before. I guess it comes from jealousy. I've seen patterns I've shown guys how to tie win magazine contests under their name, and I've seen fly production companies tie variations of patterns (the main component being something I claimed as unique) with another fly tiers name in front of it and a little write up of how they are the artist behind the creation. I think I could be more relaxed about it if it just appeared with a regular fly name instead of having someones first or last name in front of it.
I've just tried to name flies with things like "Air-filled Stonefly, or Chain-stitched Mayfly, or Twisted Hopper, or Looped Cicada, or Braided Stonefly Nymph.
I've also come to realize (and this helps my fragile ego) that there are a heck of a lot more tiers out there now than there was 25 years ago and some very talented ones.
I've tried to be less uppity and more gracious in complimenting the creative spirit and talent of others and hope to continue to move in that direction.

Do fish care what size you are. Lil, little, small, micro, etc. I don't think they care. Simms even makes custom waders etc.
I just hate it when people call me the "big lurch" or "rabid ogre" etc. Big people have feelings too.
BTW, Big Lurch, and Rabid Ogre are fly patterns that I am in the middle of creating, and the names are protected by law and big guys like me everywhere. Create at your own risk.

cheech, its only really bad if your wife or girlfriend calls you or your new fly patterns that are going to be named after you "Speedy" or "noodle" then you got something to worry about. What other people call you, who cares.
