With the high water raging I've got "bait dunkin" on the brain. What types of worm flies do you guys like to tie/fish. I looking for something more substantial and meaty looking than the standard san juan. Any suggestions?
Try something like this http://www.troutfitters.com/site/gallery-detail/107 in a few differnt colors. I don't think the pattern matters much. A worm is a worm ; )

Nativecutt, I'd love the recipe for the Dirty Worm (looks to me like it uses bugskin or chamois- like matierial if your fly is like the one pictured!?).
I'm hoping that F/V Gulf Ventur pipes up, from the looks of things on his blog he's been nailing fish with a couple different worm patterns...

Thanks cheech!! Gotta love charlies fly box, I actually just saw that tutorial last night and am planning to time some variations up tonight.
I hope you're not tying yours up with Mustads or you might not be "sticking" very many...

Do the gamas or DIE!
I would tie more with Mustads more but I break out in hives every time I use them. I have started to have to use rubber gloves to tie my old school wet flies.

In general, I hate Mustad hooks, but their grub/worm hook isn't too bad once you pinch down the over sized barb. I haven't noticed any hook up problems with it.

Where could I find the gamas? Word on the street is they are hard to find! If you are lucky maybe F/V and I will share? And those hives you are get are nasty! But... I'm not sure those are from tying with mustchraps though.

That barb is nasty it jacks the fish up bad!

That fly nich pictured looks like a chamois leech. The dirty worm is a simple but effective imitation. Basically tie it as a san juan worm but use rubber leg material as tail, body, head instead of micro chenille. Cement the hook shank and wrap body. Lot's of movement!!!

Ryan Barnes showed us this fly at the Wasatch Expo. I thought I remembered his having a triangular body. I have been wrapping something similar with thread and hard as nails. I like the condom idea.

There is a worm pattern I have been meaning to toss but never got around to it, called the bead headed marabou worm. It has a bead on one end marabou body and tail w/ a foam cilindar glued over the tail. I guess the weight of the bead and the foam counter balance each other throwing the fly into a funky dance down at the bottom of the stream. I am guessing a strip then a pause on stillwater would cause a similar action. Has anyone given this worm a try? http://www.thebookmailer.com/Flies/Nymphs/bhMarabouWorm.html
