I'll be in Utah the first week in July and am curious what sizes I should tie up. I typically fish nymph with a soft Hackle dropper and figure this should work out west as well. I'm just wondering what size soft Hackles I should have on hand. In Southern Appalachians, a size 16 is pretty standard and about all I tie, but I guess it might be too small.
Any suggestions? I also will tie up some scuds and sow bugs, but have no idea what size is the standard.

I by no means claim to know what I'm doing but size 16 around here is definitely not too small. In July we have PMDs and Caddis flies. I usually keep size 16, 18 and 20 on hand for both. Scuds and sows I don't use bigger then a 18 but others on here might go bigger.

I am a fan of a size 14-16 sow bug. No reason to fish smaller when the fish pummel the 14s and 16s.

How do these look? I've never tied them or fished them before. I tied them in #16

Hey are you on the NGTO message board? I moved out here from GA in 2000. I joined the NGTO board back in 97 i think and was palling around with Aaron and KB during its infancy. I really need to get back home and float the Hooch. How are the water levels? When are you planning on heading out this way? Maybe we can hit some reservoirs when you are out this way.

The provo fish aren't picky. You can tie up a super simple sow. The best dubbing(for me at least) has been the rainbow sow scud or dark rainbow sow scud. Tie them with red thread and a red head (makes a HUGE difference). Use a size 14-16 curved, dress the shank with red thread, use a dubbing loop and with rainbow sow scud in it tied in off the back, wrap it forward and tie off with a read head, pick out the sides, trim the bottom/top flat and you have yourself a super simple sow that takes seconds to tie so its not a killer if you loose 5-6 of them. You can rib with wire to help make them stronger but I usually don't.

Yeah that's me on NGTO. Sorry about the late response as I lost track of this thread. The water flows are doing fine right now. Lanier is 13' down but everything else is pretty much normal. It's too early to tell if we are out of the drought yet.
