....................or the pretender?

Dog's are pretty phlippin' amazing creatures......., but

Can they dictate your approach, your strategy & your angle? Is their keen sense something we don't quite grasp or harness? Are their eyes something we can't see through? It's like that age old question; up? or down? Down always seems a little less enticing considering the fact that you're presently standing in the fishizz sight, as the fish upstream are unaware of your presence & wine fueled gibberish. ;-). Sleepy fish act better on the down & across presentation.....or those blinded fish, when you've finally decided to turn away from the sun, dry your eyes (which are currently bleeding profusely from SPF 33) & fish to the fish..........that currently......have the sun in their eyes. There will be blood.

My dog will hunt.

The dogs are really amazing animals, accurately mans best friend.... They show smarter than the majority of fishing buddies most of the time. But should one bring his mutt to the river? It depends. It's difficult enough to stealth in on the wild ones, without having to yell at rover to stay back. A few of my fishing cronies have invited their “well behaved dogs” to tag along with us. We’ve spent most of the time tending to the dogs needs.
If an angler finds a stream where he would otherwise be alone, fine… bring Lassie. If you have to bring your “attack dog” with you to back you up (“this is my fishing hole and you better back off”) then that’s another story.

But dogs as guides? Now you’re just being silly. Dogs don't point fish.... they point game birds, chase rabbits... and cougars... and trucks. ;)

Sorry- my dog points fish and knows why I'm there. Stealthier than any of us on our best day. Takes a step only when I do- Dogfish is a once in one's life time dog. She is going on 14 and still has one good year left in her. I purchased a new pup 2 months ago with the hope she can impart some of here un-natural wisdom upon him. But I know it won't be the same. My life was blessed with this one, what a sheep dog can do in the pasture this dog can do on the stream and I had very little to do with it.

Depends on what you did with the cat while it was sleeping with you .

Chili or the Chi-hua-hua?

I am sure you looked like Reece Witherspoon wearing a pair of Simms XL Kings on the South Fork.

Gary LaFontaine's pooch, as described in several anecdotal and interesting stories in his stillwater book (I don't remember the title right now), was arguably the smartest fishing dog ever. If all dogs were like that, and could even sit on toon and help out, then dogs should be there. Some exceptions are great, but most pups are more of a nuisance......
