I have fished the Gunnison before...you can fish it a couple of ways depending upon how interested you are in hiking. The easiest way is to hike up from the confluence of the Gunnison and the N. Fork of the Gunnison. There is a road that will take to to this point that is just before the town of Hotchkiss, CO. If you are more adventurous, you can head out on the dirt road that parrellels Black Canyon and hike down of the of the 3 trails (the chukar .....and I can't remember the other two names). I hiked down the eastern most trail. If I recall correctly it is probably a 2-3 mile hike with the last mile being pretty damn steep in loose rock. But once you hit the river it is a fantasic spot with great fishing....although hiking up from the confluence 2-3 miles also puts you in some great fishing water.

At the confluence their is a business that I believe will rent pontoon boats and shuttle you up river so that you can float through the Black Canyon portion (or a part of it at least). I didn't have enough time to explore that option. There is a great fly shop in Grand Junction that can give you all the details. I believe it is called Western Anglers.

Hope this helps. Email me if you have other questions.

You seem to get around! Thanks for the info! I'm always planning some sort of backwoods adventure, so I'll definetly keep this in mind. I didn't realize that there was " easy" hike in access.
