So I am planning on hitting the green and haven't done any fishing other than the freeze your ass off trip this winter. I lost my freaking main box with all streamers (except a few that a couple of you have tied for me) and my dries (same thing). I want to head out and purchase some flies for this trip to make sure that i am prepared but can't really afford to pay what they ask in dutch john. I have never fished the green at this time of year and I don't have a ton of faith in hatch charts as they are pretty general I would rather hear if possible, from a few of you what I would need to bring. I was thinking some black wd-40's, zebra midges, some eggs (aren't the bows spawning) some blue wings some of my fav. buggers. Any other suggestions would be great. I still have some of the general nymphs, prince, pheasant, etc...
Also, I was invited to hit the miracle mile instead of going on this trip with you guys but said no. 4 floats free, gas free, just have to chip in on the hotel and food and I said no thanks. the thing is I want to hit the n. platte as well. Nothing but love for a bunch of strangers.
Oh, I almost forgot. I need to get some new oar locks I have a yellow water skeeter (don't know the exact kind) but I broke the locks oaring in a wind storm and the new ones I bought are to small. Whats up with that. Does anyone know where I can get a new set that will fit. Thanks again,

I'm suppose to be hitting it this weekend. I'll shoot you a report when I get back if I go?

If it were me, I'd go prepared to fish midges but have some Baetis on hand just in case. Based on my last few midge trips, don't go up there without an Orange Asher or 5. Yeah, it's a dead horse I know, but that pattern is a keeper. Most of the stuff I fish isn't what you'll find in shops, but the flies you mention will do fine. Try to find some sproat midges in #22 or #24 too.

For Baetis, just whatever you can lay your hands on, but have some good bead-head emerger patterns for sure. BH Barr, BHPT's etc.

If you're willing to drive down to my neck o' the woods, I'll fix you up with some flies free o' charge in exchange for the hard time I gave you this morning on the April Fool's day deal...

Red, brown, black zebra midges in size 20 are always successful at the Green for me, no matter what time of year it is. Also, have some BWO's in your box just in case you get a decent hatch....tis the season! I've had really good success with beatis nymphs (Barr kicks @$$ there right now in the past at least) this time of year as well. Micro scuds are available in abundance as well. I like gray or green. Rainbow warrior is an effective pattern right now as well, especially fished behind some juevos.

Don't neglect the streamers right now either. I don't know what the rainbow spawn situation would be right now....probably a little early for that. (maybe not, haven't fished the green in the spring for 3 years) But they might be staging and preparing....a good time to huck meat.

Don't forget....heaven forbid I say this on this site.....egg patterns. You might be able to pick some off....if nothing else is a good attractor pattern for your beatis nymph, zebra midge, etc.....

Highlife, don't forget your streamers......morning and evening. Midges and baetis in the late morning and afternoon.

Zebra's, Zebra's, Zebra's, and a couple of emerger patterns sz. 18 & 20 are ideal in gray because they can be effective on fish keying in on Baetis as well as midges. If you are nymphing. I use primarily Black, Red, and Wine Zebra's on fish keyed in on midges. And will go to brown for fish if I am seeing indications of them going for Baetis. ( I honestly don't go smaller than sz. 18 this time of year.) As far as dries, this time of year go with a couple good baetis dun, and cripple patterns. Pick your favorite. Maybe if you have the opportunity to float go with a little cricket or two for dry dropper ( they will eat the cricket so be ready). And if you can find them out in the valley, a couple GT triple doubles in purple.

I second (or third or whatever) the zebra and BWO suggestions. Don't forget the rain/snow gear. Storminess could be your friend there when it comes to BWO hatches minus the wind. I got into a great BWO hatch last year in a moderate rain storm. I caught quite a few fish and had countless other hits. It was not very windy at all which was nice but it didn't look like your ideal fishing day. There was about 5 inches of fresh snow in Dutch John when we arrived late morning but it turned to rain in the afternoon when the BWO showed up. Wish I was going!
