I am flying in to Anchorage in April, I have extended my trip 1 day for some flyfishing....any thoughts or ideas near Anchorage?

I am interested in a guide service. At this point I have not really worked out a budget but I am open to your thoughts and ideas on a full day of guided fly fishing.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

JayMorr

So anyways I think I have a guide service in mind ....I am really interested in fishing the Kenai. Maybe some fly in or even a day of floating. (I kow I am a little early for the run. Kings on the fly would be sick!) I will let you know what I come up with but if any of you have a outtfitter that you have used, let me know.

Thanks,

Jay,

Swing by Western and talk to Matt. He guided up there a bunch of years. He'd probably have some ideas for you.

I was up there last August and there was some good fishing that is even closer to Anchorage then the kenai if you are interested. Kings, bows, grayling, dollies. I tried to shoot you an email but for some reason it didn't go through. If you want info shoot me an email and I'll get you the service and guides name.

Try contacting Bob from piscatorialpursuits.com. He's one of the better known guides on the Oly Peninsula in Washington and has been guiding on the Kasilof all summer for years. He guides both gear and fly for steelhead in WA, but could have some good reccomends for Upper Kenai or SW AK flyguides when you are there. His email is RLBALL@OLYPEN.COM.

Bob's a good dude despite being a University of Washington Alum. If you contact him tell him a Cougar was feeling sorry for him based on the lousey football team and lukewarm hoops team they've had the last couple years and gave him a reccomend...

The outfit i went with was Kenai float and fish out of coppers landing its a kid and his wife that run it and when i was up there a few years ago they lived in a teepee ! He is the son of my fathers coworker. His name is John i dont remember his wifes name. The phone number is 907-595-3505. My friend that lives in anchorage used him last year and got many dollies to the boat. We had good numbers but we went a bit later in the season. No matter what the river is worth floating just by pure beauty alone! If you have any more questions call me im sure you still have the number. When are we going fishing?

You might look at the anchor river for kings and steelhead. You don't need a guide there as it is small. I don't remember the seasons but I know they run earlier than the Suisitna drainage. Probably a 3 hour drive though. The Kenai is a tough river to flyfish for kings. I think the average time spent per king is around 21 hours on the Kenai including the peak of the run. If it was me I would fly over to the Situk In Yakutak for an exceptional steelhead run. You could probably get a flight for the price you would have paid a guide.

With only one day the kenai is a bit of a drive and the anchor is even a longer drive, but I will never forget watching the tide come in and casting into the flat water at the mouth of the anchor river and watching about 100+ steelhead come in to see if conditions were perfect to make the jurney up the river. Some of the steelhead had to be 15 lbs plus and not sure if even one fish made the run at the river. I had fish follow and look but no takers, make my legs shake for a week.

Before you plan on fishing the Kenai River, you had better check the runs.
I don't think that the Kings are in the river until mid May, and I think that you have missed the early and late season Steelhead runs.

There is usually good Rainbow fishing in the upper Kenai year around.

I just looked at the regs and the Anchor is closed till may. Trout fishing on the upper Kenai doesn't open til June 11. I think steelhead would be your best bet as they run a little later in Alaska as everthing is iced up for so long. You might be able to catch kings in the salt with a bucktail streamer.

You may have a hard time. I was detailed to AK with the Forest Service in 1992 and was stationed at Girdwood, just up the Turn Again Arm of Cook Inlet towards the Kenai from Anchorage. There was beaucoup snow until the end of April and fishing on the Kenai started in mid to late May. But good luck.
