So I'm new to tying Chironomid and a little sad that I missed the Chironomid swap. What are some of your guys favorite patters and how do you fish them? Thanks you and discuss...

Chironomid fishing is bueno no doubt. Patterns like the Chromie and similar buzzer type patterns are good. Later tonight I'll post some pics of some other ones I've been working on lately that are pretty much shake and bake.

I fish 'em with a bobber and adjust the leader/tippet to the level where the fishees are hangin'. Killer setup. Sometimes, you'll hit it where it's "give me a chironomid or I ain't bitin' nothing" type action.

I've been experimenting with some different styles, colors, stages of emergence and body features. Mostly spanflex bodies...hence the Bungie Buzzer name. Fun schtuff...

Curtis tied one of his Bungie Buzzers at the ISE show for me. They are nice bugs. He had a couple different varieties, some with hemoglobin characteristics. Interesting stuff. Something I would like to learn more about and try on some lakes.

Curtis what size of spanflex are you using for those flies?

I believe spanflex comes in one size. Grant has a cool trick for tying in spanflex w/out the bulk............it's magic!!!

To be accurate, I actually don't use the "spanflex" brand much. I've purchased I think 4 total different brands over the past number of years -- one of which was seriously some sort of bungie cord cut open and dyed. I have about three or four different types of the same flexible stuff that comes in different sizes, shapes, flashiness and colors. The best stuff comes from Fly Tyer's Dungeon called Legs Alive.

When I wrap two at a time for some of these flies, I'll either use a smaller sized piece for the non-dominant color or split a bigger size in two pieces. To deal with the bulk (which really is a matter of buying the right size), just simply stretch the crap out of it at the rear and gently release the tension as you approach the thorax. The legs alive doesn't lay as flat when not stretched, but that actually makes for more realistic segmentation on the bigger sizes (12's, 10's). Fun stuff!

Curtis

You covered the fly with "Hard as Nails" when you were done. Is that for added durability or to give it a translucent look or both?

Plus, has anyone tried twisting (I know, I've a twisting fettish) and tying it on creating a more segmented look? I would think this might work for some small green and tan caddis larvae or small stones in black and brown.

Grant showed me a pattern using super hair. you take two strands black one strand red. Wrap them together up the shank, then build whatever thorax you would like.

Granted it's hard to say if it makes a difference, but in the pictures I've seen, the bodies look shiny and glossy, plus the smaller sizes spanflex stuff gets nicked by a fishy tooth and it will not fare well. I haven't tried twisting them, but that's not a bad idea.

Nice looking bugs Curtis. You should have been in the swap. What are you using to build the thorax area?

I build bulk with the spanflex, the tag ends of the white fluff on the front and then some swiss straw or medallion sheeting for the wing buds and case.

Sick Curtis! Those look really really realistic.

I noticed in the picture that the "white" at the head of the fly is on the bottom, not the top as so many flies have.

I'll share a cool site as well.....all stages

Well, these pics were the real method to my madness. In order to get a more true representation, IMO, you need the white on top and bottom. I forget about 1/2 the time to slap some on the bottom. But as you can see in those pics, it really stands out.
